April 2013 News

APRIL 2013

From David Swanson (first appeared in a FireDogLake article, now posted at Information Clearing House):

He quotes: “Our intelligence community does assess with varying degrees of confidence that the Syrian regime has used chemical weapons on a small scale in Syria, specifically the chemical agent sarin.”

His response:  I do assess with varying degrees of horror (some of the varying degrees rather high even) that a lot of people are going to die. And how dare they die from chemical weapons when they should be dying from hellfire missiles and cluster bombs and napalm and depleted uranium and white phosphorous. We have a responsibility to protect these people from dying of the wrong type of weapon and in too small numbers."

Below is a list of some news items about events around the world, many of which the US government is involved with, or has been involved with in the recent past. Things are going very badly in Iraq and Syria, and going downhill fast in Libya and other areas in Africa.

USA – Ran a secret prison at a US base in Baghdad. Horrible human rights abuses reported. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/apr/01/camp-nama-iraq-human-rights-abuses

USA – “It seems pretty obvious to the average viewer that there is something going on in our oceans or environments that is driving such extraordinary changes in marine mammal behavior” [And it is only going to get more obvious in the near future.] http://www.csmonitor.com/Environment/2013/0410/What-is-killing-California-sea-lion-pups-Why-unusual-event-is-a-concern?nav=87-frontpage-entryInsideMonitor

USA – Not one mass shooting in the USA since 1982 has been stopped by a civilian with a gun. http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2013/04/mass-shootings-rampages-rising-data

USA – Obama administration lies about drone killings. They have no idea who they are killing, and are the least transparent and accountable US government in ages. http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2013/apr/11/three-lessons-obama-drone-lies

USA – The sweeping, 577-page report says that while brutality has occurred in every American war, there never before had been “the kind of considered and detailed discussions that occurred after 9/11 directly involving a president and his top advisers on the wisdom, propriety and legality of inflicting pain and torment on some detainees in our custody.” http://www.nytimes.com/2013/04/16/world/us-practiced-torture-after-9-11-nonpartisan-review-concludes.html

USA – It is the fullest independent effort so far to assess the treatment of detainees at Guantánamo Bay, in Afghanistan and Iraq, and at the C.I.A.’s secret prisons. Those who sanctioned the use of brutal methods, like former Vice President Dick Cheney, will continue to defend their use. But the report’s authoritative conclusion that “the United States engaged in the practice of torture” is impossible to dismiss by a public that needs to know what was committed in the nation’s name.  [Torturers R Us.] http://www.nytimes.com/2013/04/17/opinion/indisputable-torture-of-prisoners.html

Stand up for Native Forests, Stop GE Trees
Resist the Tree Biotechnology 2013 Conference
May 26 - June 1
Asheville, NC

Join Katuah Earth First!, Global Justice Ecology Project and the STOP GE
Trees Campaign for a week of resistance to genetically engineered trees.
At the end of May the International Tree Biotechnology 2013 Conference is
taking place in Asheville, NC. This conference is a gathering of many of
the major players in the genetically engineered tree business and we
intend to greet them with spirited protest.

Timber and utility corporations want to plant millions of acres
genetically engineered trees throughout the South to burn for electricity,
as well as to continue supplying the unsustainable lumber and paper
industries. These trees would be engineered to produce their own
pesticides, grow straighter and faster, tolerate manufactured pesticides,
produce sterile seeds, and reduce lignin content (this is what makes the
wood in a tree strong enough to stand up). If these traits escaped into
native tree populations, the effects would be devastating and
irreversible.

The USDA is already considering approving an industry request to sell
billions of genetically engineered freeze tolerant eucalyptus trees.
These non-native, invasive and flammable trees pose an unprecedented
threat to the forests and communities of the Southern US.

We stand to lose tens of thousands of acres of our diverse and resilient
native forests to sterile monoculture tree plantations that support few if
any native species. These protests will send a critical message to the
USDA as they are poised to approve the first ever commercial planting of
genetically engineered eucalyptus trees in several southern states.

Join activists from around the country for an action packed week of
resistance to GE trees.  We are kicking off the week with a teach-in on
May 27 followed by a mass march to the conference center on May 28th. We
are organizing and encouraging affinity group actions throughout the week
to ensure the GE tree industry does not get a moment’s rest during their

Letter to Bush in June 2005

In honor of the new Bush Lie-Bury, a look back at a letter I wrote to him years ago.

Letter to George Bush in June 2005:

How come no one was fired for the intelligence failures of 9/11?
How come no one was fired for the intelligence failures of claiming
WMDs were in Iraq?
How come no one was fired for the extremely poor post war planning in Iraq?
How come no one was fired for claiming that Saddam had something to do
with al Qaeda and 9/11?
How come no one was fired for the continuing hellish mess in Iraq?
How come no one was fired for all the scary things said about "smoking
guns" and "mushroom clouds" that were never true?
How come Powell was not fired for his performance in front of the UN?
How come I could figure out the there were no nuclear WMDs in Iraq way
back in 2002 and you could not?
How come I knew that any possible chemical or biological WMDs in Iraq
could not hurt the USA and you could not?
How come you have not resigned for all this lying and ineptitude?
Didn't Jesus say, "love your enemies" and "turn the other cheek"?
How come you claim to be "born again" in Jesus and you don't follow
his teachings at all?

No answer from him.

Rise!

“Rise like Lions after slumber
“In unvanquishable number -
“Shake your chains to earth like dew
“Which in sleep had fallen on you -
“Ye are many – they are few.”

"Work for Peace" by Gil Scott Heron

Back when Eisenhower was the President,
Golf courses was where most of his time was spent.
So I never really listened to what the President said,
Because in general I believed that the General was politically dead.
But he always seemed to know when the muscles were about to be flexed,
Because I remember him saying something, mumbling something about a Military Industrial Complex.
Americans no longer fight to keep their shores safe,
Just to keep the jobs going in the arms making workplace.
Then they pretend to be gripped by some sort of political reflex,
But all they're doing is paying dues to the Military Industrial Complex.
The Military and the Monetary,
The Military and the Monetary,
The Military and the Monetary.
The Military and the Monetary,
get together whenever they think its necessary,
They turn our brothers and sisters into mercenaries, they are turning the planet into a cemetery.
The Military and the Monetary, use the media as intermediaries,
they are determined to keep the citizens secondary, they make so many decisions that are arbitrary.
We're marching behind a commander in chief,
who is standing under a spotlight shaking like a leaf.
but the ship of state had landed on an economic reef,
so we knew he was going to bring us messages of grief.
The Military and the Monetary,
were shielded by January and went storming into February,
Brought us pot bellied generals as luminaries,
two weeks ago I hadn't heard of the son of a bitch,
now all of a sudden he's legendary.
They took the honour from the honourary,
they took the dignity from the dignitaries,
they took the secrets from the secretary,
but they left the bitch an obituary.
The Military and the Monetary,
from thousands of miles away in a Saudi Arabian sanctuary,
had us all scrambling for our dictionaries,
cause we couldn't understand the fuckin vocabulary.
Yeah, there was some smart bombs,
but there was some dumb ones as well,
scared the hell out of CNN in that Baghdad hotel.
The Military and the Monetary,
they get together whenever they think its necessary,
War in the desert sometimes sure is scary,
but they beamed out the war to all their subsidiaries.
Tried to make So Damn Insane a worthy adversary,
keeping the citizens secondary,
scaring old folks into coronaries.
The Military and the Monetary,
from thousands of miles in a Saudi Arabian sanctuary,
kept us all wondering if all of this was really truely, necessary.
We've got to work for Peace,
Peace ain't coming this way.
If we only work for Peace,
If everyone believed in Peace the way they say they do,
we'd have Peace.
The only thing wrong with Peace,
is that you can't make no money from it.
The Military and the Monetary,
they get together whenever they think its necessary,
they've turned our brothers and sisters into mercenaries,
they are turning the planet, into a cemetery.
Got to work for Peace,
Peace ain't coming this way.
We should not allow ourselves to be mislead,
by talk of entering a time of Peace,
Peace is not the absence of war,
it is the absence of the rules of war and the threats of war and the preparation for war.
Peace is not the absence of war,
it is the time when we will all bring ourselves closer to each other,
closer to building a structure that is unique within ourselves
because we have finally come to Peace within ourselves.
The Military and the Monetary,
The Military and the Monetary,
The Military and the Monetary.
Get together whenever they think its necessary,
they've turned our brothers and sisters into mercenaries,
they are turning parts of the planet, into a cemetery.
The Military and the Monetary,
The Military and the Monetary,
We hounded the Ayatollah religiously,
Bombed Libya and killed Quadafi's son hideously.
We turned our back on our allies the Panamanians,
and saw Ollie North selling guns to the Iranians.
Watched Gorbachev slaughtering Lithuanians,
We better warn the Amish,
they may bomb the Pennsylvanians.
The Military and the Monetary,
get together whenever they think its necessary,
they have turned our brothers and sisters into mercenaries,
they are turning the planet, into a cemetery.
I don't want to sound like no late night commercial,
but its a matter of fact that there are thousands of children all over the world
in Asia and Africa and in South America who need our help.
When they start talking about 55 cents a day and 70 cents a day,
I know a lot of folks feel as though that,
that's not really any kind of contribution to make,
but we had to give up a dollar and a half just to get in the subway nowadays.
So this is a song about tomorrow and about how tomorrow can be better. if we all,
"Each one reach one, Each one try to teach one".
Nobody can do everything,
but everybody can do something,
everyone must play a part,
everyone got to go to work, Work for Peace.
Spirit Say Work, Work for Peace
If you believe the things you say, go to work.
If you believe in Peace, time to go to work.
Cant be waving your head no more, go to work.

Petition to get CTS to clean up their mess in south Asheville:

We the undersigned ask CTS Corporation to pay for a full scale cleanup of the toxic chemicals leaching into the soil, water, and air surrounding the CTS of Asheville site. The delays have gone on long enough. Do the corporate socially responsible thing and clean up the mess. It should not take a government / EPA action to force you to take care of the toxins leaching into the environment of this mountain community.

> Hello All!
> My name is Jesse Kitt and I co-lead a women's service organization (The Sophia Group) through the local UCC church Land of Sky. We are very focused on the exponentially positive effects that empowering women can and does have on entire communities and indeed the world.
> We have organized another local screening of the incredible new film, Girl Rising, at the Regal Biltmore Grande Stadium 15. The film was created by 10x10, a global campaign to educate and empower girls.
> If you missed the screening at Beaucatcher on Easter, here is another opportunity to see this important film! The film is rated pg-13 and this would be a wonderful activity (and educational opportunity) for Mother's to share with their pre-teen-ish and teenage daughters!
> Girl Rising tells the stories of 9 girls from around the world who face - and overcome - unbelievable obstacles on the path toward getting an education. Each girl’s story was written by an author and is narrated by a cast of great actresses, including Meryl Streep, Kerry Washington, Anne Hathaway, Salma Hayek, Alicia Keys, and others. The cinematography is stunning and I really am excited to see the film, and to be involved in a global effort for girl’s education.

> First, watch the trailer: http://10x10act.org/girl-rising/
> You can sign up to buy a ticket for the movie here:
> A portion of Girl Rising ticket sales will help fund programs for girls, so seeing the film literally makes an impact on girls’ lives.

> I’m planning the screening for Thursday May 16th at 7:30 pm at the Regal Biltmore Grande Stadium 15 in Biltmore Park.

> Please sign up ASAP to see the movie and tell your friends to do the same! The film can only be screened if at least 100 people sign up to see it. You will only be charged for your ticket if we succeed in booking the screening.

Veterans for Peace are aware of what is going on

The truly educated become conscious. They become self-aware. They do not lie to themselves. They do not pretend that fraud is moral or that corporate greed is good. They do not claim that the demands of the marketplace can morally justify the hunger of children or denial of medical care to the sick. They do not throw 6 million families from their homes as the cost of doing business. Thought is a dialogue with one's inner self. Those who think ask. - Chris Hedges
