We must stop this.

It is only increasing terrorism - which is the point, I suppose.

Statement from Veterans for Peace

Veterans For Peace Statement Opposing U.S. Bombing of Iraq and Syria

The U.S. is racing down a slippery slope towards war in Iraq and Syria. Since Aug. 8, the U.S. has conducted more than 124 airstrikes in Iraq. Approximately 1,000 U.S. troops are now on the ground in Iraq, with at least 350 more currently on their way.

President Obama initially said the bombing was part of a humanitarian mission to assist the Yazidi minority in northern Iraq being threatened by ISIS, the fundamentalist Islamic army that now controls wide swaths of Iraq and Syria. But Obama has now announced an open-ended bombing campaign, and he has ordered Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and Secretary of State John Kerry into the region to build military and political coalitions to sustain a long term war against ISIS.

According to the New York Times, President Obama has also authorized U.S. surveillance flights over Syria, reportedly in search of ISIS targets for later bombing missions. The Syrian government has offered to coordinate with U.S. military action against ISIS, the strongest rebel force fighting to overthrow the Assad government in Syria. But the U.S., which has aided ISIS' growth by facilitating the arming and training of rebels in Syria, has not asked permission for its flights into Syrian airspace.

Veterans For Peace members have witnessed the brutality and the futility of war, including the war in Iraq. We were sent to a war based on lies and we became part of the killing of a nation, along with as many as one million of its people. We watched as U.S. policy makers consciously stirred up ethnic and religious divisions, creating the conditions for civil war today.
Veterans know from first hand experience that you cannot bomb your way to peace. More bombing will ultimately mean more division, bloodshed, recruitment for extremist organizations, and a continual cycle of violent intervention.

Last year the American people overwhelmingly sent a message to President Obama and the Congress: No U.S. Bombing in Syria. Last month, the House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed H. Con. Res. 105 stating that there is no legal authority for U.S. military involvement in Iraq without express Congressional approval. By unilaterally pursuing miltiary action in Iraq and Syria, President Obama is acting in contempt of the American people, as well as of U.S. and international law.

We support the troops who refuse to fight and who blow the whistle on war crimes. Under international law, military personnel have the right and the responsibility to refuse to be part of illegal wars and war crimes. U.S. troops are not the cops of the world. There is no legitimate mission for any U.S. service members in Iraq or Syria. We encourage GI's to find out their rights at the GI Rights Hotline.

Veterans For Peace absolutely opposes U.S. military intervention in the Middle East, no matter what the rationalization. We call on all our members to speak out against any U.S. attacks on Iraq and Syria.

We wish to see a U.S. foreign policy based on true humanitarianism and real diplomacy based on mutual respect, guided by international law, and dedicated to human rights and equality for all.
We call attention to the excellent constructive proposals in a recent letter from 53 National Religious Groups, Academics, and Ministers Urging Alternatives to U.S. Military Action in Iraq.

We applaud the initiatives of several key peace groups and we encourage our members to participate.

ACTIONS AND READINGS

Request from a local activist:

I'm working to promote a benefit dinner for humanitarian aid in Western Kurdistan next week in Asheville. Funds will go to the Kurdish Red Crescent, which is delivering food, medicine and clothing in Northern Syria. As may know, there is a great need for aid in the region due to the ongoing civil war and recent attacks by the Islamic State.
If you can think of local peace activists or networks that would be interested in this benefit dinner, I'd love to reach them. Much a-peace-iation,

From some local activists:

On Friday, October 10th, we became the first same-sex couple to be legally married in the state of North Carolina!  This was our fifth time at the Register of Deeds office asking to marry.  About a year ago, we were arrested in the Register of Deeds office after refusing to leave until we were served at the counter.

The best wedding gift we could possibly imagine would be to continue the work of our heart, BeLoved, a house of hospitality and community committed to justice and equality.

We are working hard to expand our queer/trans shelter!  The need is great because discrimination is still rampant.  From the gay youth kicked out of their home by their parents to the gay couple we welcomed who were living in their truck in the winter after they were turned away from other shelters to the trans woman who collapsed on the bus and discharged to BeLoved from our hospital.  We get calls every day!  We are working for a place with room enough so none of our family are left in the cold.

We urgently need your help in purchasing a larger space to welcome people home!

Will you help us to raise $10,000 for October 10th our wedding day and historic day for marriage equality in the South?!

Will you give us the best wedding gift ever?
Donate to BeLoved today!

Have your say about the future of the Nantahala-Pisgah National Forests!

By WNC Alliance

The Forest Service will hold the next round of public meetings this October and November to share information about the proposed Nantahala and Pisgah National Forest Plan, including potential management areas and desired conditions. The plan will guide management of the Nantahala-Pisgah National Forests for the next 15-20 years. The meeting will open with a presentation on significant issues, management areas, and the development of plan components. The Forest Service planning team will share some proposed desired condition statements and information about watersheds and recreation settings during an open poster session. Each of the scheduled meetings will be from 4:30-7:30 p.m., will follow the same agenda and present the same information and opportunity for review and comment.

Meeting dates and locations:
Pisgah Ranger District: Oct. 21 at the Forge Valley Event Center in Mills River;
Nantahala Ranger District: Oct. 28 at the Tartan Hall in Franklin;
Appalachian Ranger District: Nov. 3 at Mars Hill College, Broyhill Chapel in Mars Hill;
Tusquitee Ranger District: Nov. 4 at Tri-County Comm Coll, Enloe Building in Murphy;
Cheoah Ranger District: Nov. 6 at the Graham Co Community Center in Robbinsville;
Grandfather Ranger District: Nov. 13 at McDowell Tech Comm Coll, Rm 113 in Marion.

The Western North Carolina Alliance will be informing citizens and facilitating their participation in the plan revision process, which will occur over a three-to-four year period. It begins with the Assessment Phase, which will take about a year to complete. During this phase, the Forest Service will collect and compile data and other information on the current state of the Nantahala and Pisgah National Forests. The Planning Phase, which follows the Assessment Phase, will take two to three years to complete. After the plan is completed, the Monitoring Phase will begin and continue until the next plan revision.

In the coming months, the Forest Service will provide details on meetings and other information that foster public participation in the plan revision process. Information about the plan revision process is available online here.

Originally published in 1987, the plan received a significant amendment in 1994. Each national forest and grassland is governed by a management plan in accordance with the National Forest Management Act. These plans set management, protection and use goals and guidelines. The 2012 Planning Rule guides the planning process. The rule includes stronger protections for forests, water and wildlife, while supporting the economic vitality of rural communities. It requires the use of the best available scientific information to inform decisions. The 2012 rule strengthens the role of public involvement and dialogue throughout the planning process.
