07/10/14 SOCIAL JUSTICE MOVIE “URANIUM DRIVE-IN”

proposed uranium mill has an economically devastated mining community in Colorado hopeful for the
first time in decades. When the environmentalists step in to stop the mill, the
pro-mill advocates are enraged. A debate ensues, pitting jobs against health
and the environment. Without judgment, both sides of the issue are
brought to life in heart-wrenching detail as the film follows conflicting
opinions and visions for the future. The film offers no easy answers but aims
instead to capture personal stories and paint a portrait of the lives behind
this nuanced and complex issue. The film is at 7 PM. Location is Unitarian

07/13/14 STOP FRACKED GAS EXPORTS IN DC
The first national rally to say “NO” to fracked gas exports.
The natural gas industry has plans to create 15-20 export terminals around the
country so that it can export fracked US gas to the rest of the world.
Unfortunately for a host of reasons, once exported, this gas results in as much
greenhouse gas pollution as burning coal would be. These export terminals are
like the KXL pipeline, and must be stopped. CCAN(Chesapeake Climate Action
Network) has been organizing to stop the Cove Point terminal on the Chesapeake Bay, which requires approval by FERC (the
Federal Energy Regulatory Commission). Up to now has been a rubber stamp for
the energy industry. CCAN is organizing a large protest at FERC on July 13. The
nonviolent direct action (which includes risking arrest) on the 14th will be
the punctuation mark to that protest. Leaders of the 2013 Walk for our
Grandchildren, with support from CCAN, are organizing these two events. For
additional information, including how to register, call Steve at 828-777-7816
or email earthsun2@gmail.com or Greg at 828-206-5502 or gregorybyost@gmail.com.

A Record of Failure to Stagger the Imagination
QUOTE: The United States has been at war — major boots-on-the-ground conflicts and minor interventions, firefights, air strikes, drone assassination campaigns, occupations, special ops raids, proxy conflicts, and covert actions — nearly nonstop since the Vietnam War began. That’s more than half a century of experience with war, American-style, and yet few in our world bother to draw the obvious conclusions.
Given the historical record, those conclusions should be staring us in the face. They are, however, the words that can’t be said in a country committed to a military-first approach to the world, a continual build-up of its forces, an emphasis on pioneering work in the development and deployment of the latest destructive technology, and a repetitious cycling through styles of war from full-scale invasions and occupations to counterinsurgency, proxy wars, and back again.
So here are five straightforward lessons — none acceptable in what passes for discussion and debate in this country — that could be drawn from that last half century of every kind of American warfare:
1. No matter how you define American-style war or its goals, it doesn’t work. Ever.
2. No matter how you pose the problems of our world, it doesn’t solve them. Never.
3. No matter how often you cite the use of military force to “stabilize” or “protect” or “liberate” countries or regions, it is a destabilizing force.
4. No matter how regularly you praise the American way of war and its “warriors,” the U.S. military is incapable of winning its wars. [the results of wars in Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan, and Iraq ranged from stalemate to defeat and disaster]
5. No matter how often American presidents claim that the U.S. military is “the finest fighting force in history,” the evidence is in: it isn’t.
Rest of the article is here.

Some questions.......
Considering that the NSA and CIA and FBI are spying on
everything and everyone around the world, why didn’t they see the takeover by
ISIS in Iraq
ahead of them? For pete’s sake, that
group of bloody rebels are on twitter! For the last 14 years, those agencies
have never been able to figure out ahead of time what was going to happen….
with the exception of the FBI who have been able to predict the terror attacks
that they have set up. They totally miss on the ones done by real terrorists
instead of idiots who they entrap, however.
Can anyone tell me why the Taliban had opium production way down
in 2001 (they banned growing poppies) and now, nearly 13 years of occupation by
the US
forces and NATO, the production of opium is now WAY UP? I don’t know the
production for 2014, but 2013 was a banner year. See chart below.
Can anyone tell me why big banks can launder billions of
dollars in drug money and get away with it, but we send teens with joints or
old women who won’t rat out their grandkids’ pot usage to jail for years and
years?
And why can’t the world’s biggest military (by far!) and
most expensive military (by far!) not able to win any wars other than wars
against unarmed countries (like Grenada).
Iraq and Afghanistan did not even have an
air force! Yet nearly every conflict since WW2 has ended in stalemate (Korea) or total disaster for native populations
(Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq,
Libya,
countless other places!).
And why are we spreading weapons all around the world,
anyway? The ISIS rebels had a parade
this month showing off US
military hardware, like humvees, and US weapons. I suppose it makes things like
our wars more ‘sporting’ when our enemies have really good US equipment, but
our military is so good at losing wars (since the start of the Vietnam war)
that helping out the ones they are/will be fighting does not seem like a sound
idea to me.
Are we, like, insane? Or just vastly, vastly stupid?

Anti-war protesters were correct
Anti-war protesters were correct: the war of aggression on Iraq
has led to bloody chaos. Above is a photo from 2003 of anti-war protesters in London. I was
protesting here in the USA.
I take no pride in being correct: I was only one of millions of people who
figured out the claims of WMDs was a pack of lies. I was only one of millions
of people who knew this would end very badly for the Iraqi people.
And, at this point in time, the people who were not out there protesting this war of aggression and massively evil actions by the Bush administration should do one thing, and only one thing: SHUT THE FUCK UP FOREVER.

PETITIONS TO SIGN!
Fallujah. Mosul.
Baghdad.
Hearing these names again sends a chill down my spine. As a Marine who served in Iraq, I know well the bloody costs paid by Americans and by Iraqis in these and so many other cities over the past decade. I have friends who to this day remain on the front lines of a sectarian conflict that is tearing their homeland apart. And I am saddened to see the renewed and growing violence once again gripping Iraq.
But I also know that the solution to the chaos in Iraq is not another American military intervention. The president was right to end the Iraq War in 2011, and it would be a tremendous mistake to restart it now.
The United States and Iraq have already paid dearly for George W. Bush’s disastrous decision to launch the Iraq War. With Iraq once again descending into violence, we must not repeat the mistakes of the past. No military intervention, whether a massive invasion like the one in 2003 or the limited airstrikes some are calling for today, will solve the deep and complex challenges Iraq is facing. Iraq’s problems can only be solved by Iraqis, not American bombs. Launching another military intervention in Iraq would only throw more fuel on a fire that is raging. Even worse, it would once again risk American lives in a fight that is not ours and that we cannot win.
Over the past few days, the news has been filled with stories of a swift insurgent advance through northern Iraq. Sunni militants, under the banner of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), have taken over city after city in northern Iraq. These militants, fresh from the fight in neighboring Syria, have made dramatic progress, capturing American-made weapons and supplies left behind by the fleeing Iraqi security forces. Their advance is fueled in no small part by the repressive sectarian policies of Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. The situation may get worse before it gets better, but one thing is clear: American bombs are not the solution.
Even more chilling than watching the violence in Iraq is listening to the pundits here at home. The very same men and women who lied to the American public and sent thousands of my fellow men and women in uniform to their deaths are now leading the charge for another military intervention. Many of these men should be in jail; none of them should be listened to.
If my friends in Iraq are to ever find peace, if their children and their grandchildren have any chance of growing up without the butchery of beheading knives and the carnage of car bombs, peace will come through negotiation and settlement, as it briefly did post-2007, and not through an American strategy of choosing sides, choosing winners and losers, and indulging in the self-satisfactory, self-indulgent, guilt-erasing, yet illusory, medication of bombing.
That's why I signed a petition to The United States House of Representatives, The United States Senate, and President Barack Obama, which says:
"President Obama and Congress, don't take new military action in Iraq. The solution to the chaos is not another American military intervention, including bombing strikes. President Obama was right to end the Iraq War in 2011, and it would be a tremendous mistake to restart it now."

No to NATO military exercises in Ukraine
To: U.S. Congress, President, and Department of
"Defense"
We call on the U.S.
government to work with other NATO governments to cancel the Rapid Trident
exercise, and to commit to not participating in military exercises in Ukraine. Why is
this important? We note with great concern that U.S.
and other NATO troops are scheduled to participate in joint military exercises
in Ukraine
in July as part of NATO’s Rapid Trident maneuvers. Ukraine is not a member of NATO.
Its participation in military exercises by a nuclear-armed alliance with a
first-strike policy can only further destabilize the country.
I ask you to add your name to this important issue. Every
name that is added builds momentum around the campaign and makes it more likely
for us to get the change we want to see.
*********************************************
Do Not Bomb, Arm, or Send Troops to Iraq
To: U.S. Congress, President, and Department of
"Defense"
Stop arming Iraq.
And do not bomb or send in troops. Remove U.S. drones immediately. Pursue a
ceasefire and negotiations, working through the United Nations and the Arab
League. Why is this important? Iraq
needs actual aid, not "military aid." A policy of promoting,
facilitating, and engaging in violence has produced nothing but disasters for
decades.
Please join the campaign to say DO NOT BOMB, ARM, OR SEND
TROOPS TO IRAQ.
I ask you to add your name to this important issue. Every
name that is added builds momentum around the campaign and makes it more likely
for us to get the change we want to see.

Press Release from Iraq War Veterans
Iraq
Veterans Warn Obama:
Military
Intervention Will Be a Disaster
WHEN: 1 PM THURSDAY, JUNE 19
WHERE: NATIONAL PRESS CLUB (Lisagor Rm.),
Washington, DC, 529 14th St. NW, 13th Floor
WHO: ROSS CAPUTI and MATT SOUTHWORTH, Iraq
War Veterans
TIM KAHLOR, Father of 2-tour Iraq veteran
with PTSD
RAY MC GOVERN, former CIA Intelligence
Analyst
Iraq War veterans are sending a message to President
Obama: Don’t intervene in Iraq, it will only result in more lost lives,
both U.S. and Iraqi.
After the nightmare of more than a decade of war, many Iraq veterans see the destabilizing U.S. invasion and occupation of Iraq as the reason for the crisis the country finds itself in. They point to the futility of further U.S. military action and the likelihood that airstrikes, rather than benefiting the Iraqi people, will continue to bring them death, destruction and dislocation, while also putting U.S. service members in further danger.
Today, Iraq veterans and family members are calling on the Obama administration to stay out of the brewing civil war; to provide humanitarian aid to refugees; and to pursue international diplomacy towards reconciliation for the people of Iraq.

Today, Iraq veterans and family members are calling on the Obama administration to stay out of the brewing civil war; to provide humanitarian aid to refugees; and to pursue international diplomacy towards reconciliation for the people of Iraq.
Speakers Include:
ROSS CAPUTI is a Marine Corps veteran
of the 2nd siege of Fallujah in November and December of 2004,
considered the bloodiest battle of the U.S. war in Iraq. Today he is on the Board of Directors of
ISLAH (www.reparations.org) and he is a member of Iraq Veterans Against the War.
“The many American lives that were lost in Iraq cannot be made
meaningful by propping up an unpopular government with violence. Any
further actions taken by the U.S. to arm the Maliki government in Baghdad or
support it through military intervene:tion and airstrikes would be completely
unacceptable and immoral, as Iraqi civilians will surely suffer the most.“
MATT SOUTHWORTH
is an Iraq War veteran who in 2004 was stationed near the strategic town of Tal
Afar, 260 miles northwest of Baghdad, which was captured by
Sunni militants this week. He has expressed his sadness and outrage in an article for Friends
Committee on National Legislation (FCNL), where he works. Matt is a member of Veterans For Peace, an
organization that represents thousands of U.S. veterans.
“With nearly 5,000 U.S. troops killed, over 30,000 wounded,
hundreds of thousands of Moral Injuries and millions of Iraqis killed, wounded and displaced, today I
wonder for what? Never until this moment have I felt so much
like it was all for nothing.... The human costs are incalculable, but will the
trillions of dollars spent on war and veteran care do any good whatsoever for
the U.S., Iraq or the world? A decade after the invasion, almost no positive
effect of our involvement in Iraq remains intact and yet the talk is almost
exclusively around military intervention.
Why?”
TIM KAHLOR is the
father of medically retired Sgt. Ryan Kahlor.
His son served over 24 months in 2 tours
in Iraq. He and his wife Laura live Murrieta, CA.
"People want to believe that when your loved
ones come home from war, it’s all good. End of story. Yet seven years
after our son’s last deployment and getting him diagnosed with TBI and PTSD, we
are still fighting to make sure our son is alive and well and getting the
treatment he needs for all his injuries. Now I know the wounds
of war will never heal completely and our son like so many others continue to
be in mental combat every day."
RAY MC GOVERN served as an Army
Infantry/Intelligence officer during the early Sixties; was then a CIA analyst
for 27 years. He is co-founder of Veteran Intelligence Professionals for
Sanity (VIPS).
“Already too much carnage in Iraq has been
‘justified’ by ‘unsubstantiated, contradicted, or even non-existent’
intelligence (Senate Intelligence
Committee, June 5, 2008). 100 years ago as WWI loomed, Rudyard Kipling
pulled strings to get his (under-aged) only son, John, into the army.
Filled with remorse when young John was killed a year later, Kipling put the
following words in his dead son’s mouth:
‘If they question why we died, tell them because
our fathers lied.’ The soil of Iraq is caked with blood borne of lies –
lies that persist and poison public discourse. We are all responsible for this chaos.
No more war!”
“U.S. intervention will give new energy to current fighters and likely draw a whole new group of people to fight against the U.S.,” said Michael McPhearson, Executive Director of Veterans For Peace. “The U.S. does not need to create new enemies. This will make a political solution even more difficult, while endangering the lives of Iraqis and Americans. It is time for the U.S. to move away from war.”
Veterans and military families will participate in a White House rally
at 1 pm this Saturday,
June 21, in conjunction with demonstrations around the country.

Statement from Iraq Veterans Against the War
Above photo came from a Veterans for Peace email.
MESSAGE FROM IRAQ VETERANS AGAINST THE WAR
Official Statement On the Crisis in Iraq
Iraq
Veterans Against the War (IVAW) – an organization comprised of
individuals who served or continue to serve in the US Military following
September 11, 2001 – calls on Congress, the President, and his
administration to reject the use of violence and militarism in response
to the current outbreak of violence in Iraq.
Many
of our members deployed to Iraq during the recent US occupation. Those
of us who were there know first hand that US military solutions in Iraq
do not serve the interests of the Iraqi people. We advocate for the
self-determination of all people, in this case the people of Iraq. Any
solution to this crisis must come from them.
When
the United States invaded and occupied Iraq, the formerly secular
country was destabilized. The United States and the Department of
Defense intentionally created and agitated sectarian divisions that
would not have otherwise existed. The result of this is what we see
today, and Iraqi civilians are paying for it.
Iraqis
have been paying with their lives for this war since March 2003. After
10 years of US occupation they were left with little relief. Their
economic infrastructure was destroyed and new work to repair it has been
awarded to US corporations and contractors, instead of to Iraqis. Iraqi
labor unions face frequent retaliation, and an entire generation of
children has been born with severe birth defects in places like
Hawija. No one has been held to account. No effort has been made to
clean the waste left behind.
When
it comes to arming “freedom fighters” the US has a tendency to act as a
fair-weather friend; today’s freedom fighter becomes tomorrow’s
terrorist and justification to pursue an illegal invasion. Instead of
creating more chaos, we should be solving the problems that already
exist. Instead of installing another puppet president, the United States
should be cleaning up environmental contamination, investigating
allegations of torture, and allowing democracy to blossom in both
government and labor, without US intervention.
In Solidarity,
Joyce, Maggie, Matt, and Julia

UPCOMING EVENTS
06/16/14 FORUM ON CLIMATE AND FAITH
To Stand Against the Storm, We Must Stand Somewhere: A Forum

what unique role can faith communities play in North Carolina? In this 1/2 day workshop on
June 16th, join us as we learn from local and national leaders on a wide array
of topics related to faith and climate. This solutions-oriented gathering will
explore not only what challenges we face with climate change, but also the
unique role faith communities have to play in finding creative solutions. Tired
of another guilt-tripping environmental workshop that bums you out and leaves
you feeling overwhelmed? This one is different. Join us as we focus on
theological reflection, ecological resilience, and that much-neglected biblical
virtue of hope. Our evening keynote will be given by biblical scholar and
activist Ched Myers. This forum is free; however, you must register in advance.
Sponsored by the Food, Faith, and Religious Leadership Initiative at Wake
Forest U. School of Divinity, WNC Green Congregations, Western NC Alliance, NC

Join us on Monday, June 16th at 1 PM as 61,000 signatures
asking lawmakers to raise teacher pay to the national average. Come to Pack Square in

the state, leaving the profession, or moonlighting at second jobs because of
terrible pay. Meanwhile, North
Carolina voters overwhelmingly support the move to
raise teacher pay to the national average over the next 4-5 years. How has the
state Senate responded? A pay raise in exchange for stripping teaching
assistants from all 2nd and 3rd grade classrooms in the state. And the state
House? They suggest trying to convince more people to gamble on the lottery to
raise money for a one-time teacher raise. Time is 1 to 2 PM and location is Pack Square in Asheville.
06/17/14 CALL IN DAY AGAINST FRACKING
Call the Governor's office and your legislators’ offices and
