Stopping the Keystone XL pipeline

This is going on in DC right now. I wish I could be there with them!

On April 22, an alliance of pipeline fighters — ranchers, farmers, tribal communities, and their friends — called the Cowboy and Indian Alliance rode into Washington DC and set up camp on the National Mall.
For 5 days, they will hold ceremonies and demonstration to remind him of the threat this tar sands pipeline poses to our climate, land, water and tribal rights.
On April 26, the Alliance has invited friends and allies against the pipeline to join us as we conclude our camp and march together to make an unmistakable message to Pres. Obama.
We’re raising funds to support Cowboy Indian Alliance members to send the strongest message possible to President Obama this April and beyond. Your contribution will make sure organizers from along the pipeline route can make it to DC and bring all of the beauty and power of our movement along with them, and support this fight for the long haul as we continue to work to stop the pipeline together.
Some of the things you’ll help fund include:
  • Direct support for Cowboy Indian Alliance members
  • Food, logistics and spiritual items for the camp
  • Ongoing work to build support to stop Keystone XL while President Obama approaches his final decision

05/15/14 RADIATION TODAY LECTURE AT UNCA
Dr. Perry Sprawls will offer an interesting talk on radiation in our lives today. There are different types of radiation, and with the exception of light, it is invisible. When we become more familiar with the radiation in our lives today, knowing its characteristics, where it comes from, how it is used in modern society, and its effects on the human body, we can make intelligent decisions and live in harmony with this part of our environment. In this program we review the different types and sources of radiation, their benefits to individuals and society, and the actions to minimize risks. Perry Sprawls is Distinguished Emeritus Professor, Emory University, Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences, with over 50 years of experience in the use of radiation for medical purposes. Quotes

Which is the most “revealing and disturbing” quote?

The illegal we do immediately. The unconstitutional takes a little longer.
– Henry Kissinger, National Security Advisor and Secretary of State under Richard Nixon, and Secretary of State under Gerald Ford

We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false.
-- William Casey, CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

The CIA owns everyone of any significance in the major media.
– William Colby, former CIA director

The conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses is an important element in Democratic society. Those who manipulate this unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of our country. Our minds are molded, our tastes are formed, our ideas suggested, largely by men we have never
heard of.
– Edward Bernays (1891-1995) "Father" of modern public relations (PR) and director of the U.S. Committee on Public Information during World War I, on government propaganda

The world is divided in to three classes of people: a very small group that makes things happen, a somewhat larger group that watches things happen, and the great multitude which never knows what happened.
– Nicholas Murray Butler, President of Columbia University, 1931 Nobel Peace Prize winner

If the personal freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution inhibit the government's ability to govern the people, we should look to limit those guarantees.
– Bill Clinton

The purpose of government is to rein in the rights of the people.
– Bill Clinton

We can't be so fixated on our desire to preserve the rights of ordinary Americans.
– Bill Clinton, U.S.A. Today, 11 March 1993

It is well that the people of the nation do not understand our banking and monetary system, for if they did, I believe there would be a revolution before tomorrow morning.
-- Henry Ford

The threat of environmental crisis will be the 'international disaster key' that will unlock the New World Order.
-- Mikhail Gorbachev

Make the lie big, make it simple, keep saying it, and eventually they will believe it.
--Adolf Hitler

It also gives us a very special, secret pleasure to see how unaware the people around us are of what is really happening to them.
– Adolf Hitler

The individual is handicapped by coming face to face with a conspiracy so monstrous he cannot believe it exists, ....even though it does exist.
– J. Edgar Hoover

In searching for a new enemy to unite us, we came up with the idea that pollution, the threat of global warming, water shortages, famine and the like would fit the bill ... All these dangers we will claim human intervention caused them and it is only through manipulating attitudes and behaviour that they can be overcome. The real enemy, then, is humanity itself."
– Alexander King, Bertrand Schneider - founder and secretary, respectively, of the Club of Rome - The First Global Revolution, pp.104-105

Today Americans would be outraged if U.N. troops entered Los Angeles to restore order; tomorrow they will be grateful. This is especially true if they were told there was an outside threat from beyond, whether real or promulgated, that threatened our very existence. It is then that all peoples of the world will plead with world leaders to deliver them from this evil. The one thing every man fears is the unknown. When presented with this scenario, individual rights will be willingly relinquished for the guarantee of their well being granted to them by their world government.
– Henry Kissinger

Fascism should more properly be called corporatism because it is the merger of state and corporate power.
– Benito Mussolini

Behind the ostensible government sits enthroned an invisible government owing no allegiance and acknowledging no responsibility to the people.
– Theodore Roosevelt

The real truth of the matter is, as you and I know, that a financial element in the larger centers has owned the government ever since the days of Andrew Jackson, and I am not wholly excepting the administration of W.W. (Woodrow Wilson.) The country is going through a repetition of Jackson's fight with the Bank of the United States—only on a far bigger and broader basis.
– Franklin D Roosevelt

Every time we do something you tell me America will do this and will do that... I want to tell you something very clear: Don't worry about American pressure on Israel. We, the Jewish people, control America, and the Americans know it.
-- Ariel Sharon, Israeli Prime Minister, October 3, 2001

The easiest way to gain control of the population is to carry out acts of terror the public will clamor for such laws if the personal security is threatened.
-- Joseph Stalin

A sign of progress

This picture comes from a facebook post by Occupy WNC. This resolution passed the Illinois Senate last week. Occupy WNC is also working on this issue, as is "Move to Amend" in Buncombe County. The Citizens United decision by the US Supreme Court needs to be overturned in a constitutional amendment. This is going to be a very long hard fight.

Upcoming events for the week of April 20, 2014

Tulips and daffodils at the Biltmore Estate.

04/27/14 WHAT DOES SOLIDARITY LOOK LIKE?
This event is to explore and promote female solidarity around appearance. Time is 11 AM and location is Eagle Street Coffee Emporium at 39 S. Market St (corner of Eagle and Market). This is caddy-corner to the backside of the big public/Diana Wortham Theatre parking garage that's on Biltmore downtown. Late last summer the twitter hashtag: #solidarityisforwhitewomen was created by Mikki Kendall. “As the hashtag spread across Twitter, people from all walks of life started joining in – to vent their own personal frustrations, as well as to address larger political issues. Feminism as a global movement meant to unite all women has global responsibilities, and – as illustrated by hundreds of tweets – has failed at one of the most basic: it has not been welcoming to all women, or even their communities.” This campaign reignited deeply important questions in regard to race, appearance, and the level of support that we offer to each other as women. Here in Asheville we like to call ourselves a diverse city, we like to see ourselves as progressive and inclusive of everyone, but are we, really? Please join us for a facilitated discussion of these topics and bring your insight and experience. Oh, and free coffee, y'all!

05/15/14 RADIATION TODAY LECTURE AT UNCA

When we become more familiar with the radiation in our lives today, knowing its characteristics, where it comes from, how it is used in modern society, and its effects on the human body, we can make intelligent decisions and live in harmony with this part of our environment. In this program we review the different types and sources of radiation, their benefits to individuals and society, and the actions to minimize risks. Perry Sprawls is Distinguished Emeritus Professor, Emory University, Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences, with over 50 years of experience in the use of radiation for medical purposes. Car sharing is coming to Asheville!

Our friends at Asheville City's Sustainability Advisory Committee on Energy and the Environment and at WNC Alliance have been working on bringing “Car Sharing” to our city, and the roll-out is approaching.

An announcement from WNCA reads: “Car sharing has many benefits, including enabling people to go without a car and enabling people to ride the bus, bike, or walk to work and still run errands or attend meetings during the day that are more easily done in a car.Combined with Asheville's ART (public bus transportation) routes, ever-growing bike lanes, sidewalks, and greenways, car sharing should also enhance Asheville's affordability. What is car sharing? It's a program through which members reserve and use a car for short periods of time, paying only for the time used. There is no fee to become a member and applications can be submitted online. Once approved, members simply reserve a car online, enter and start the car with a code, and pay only for the hours and miles used. If you need a car only part of a day, car sharing is usually less expensive and easier than renting a car from a traditional car rental company. The City will officially launch the program in April, with three cars parked downtown and one on the campus of UNC Asheville.”

The company partner for this project is UHaul, which offered the best fit for this city, according to folks at Asheville City's Sustainability Advisory Committee on Energy and the Environment. More information should be appearing in the media.

Reject and Protect

Photo came from email from 350.org - text below from their email too.

In the past week, Reject and Protect, the action to stop Keystone XL led by the Cowboy Indian Alliance, has really come together.

The big event is now scheduled for Saturday April 26th at 11 AM on the National Mall in Washington DC -- that’s when folks will be converging to make our closing argument against the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline, and tell President Obama to protect our land, water and climate.

Together we’ll be delivering a handpainted tipi to President Obama -- a symbol of both our hope that he will live up to his promises, and our promise to stand with farmers, ranchers and tribal leaders to resist the pipeline should he approve it.

It will be an event of unusual power -- I think you’ll want to be there.

Last weekend, the Cowboy Indian Alliance met on Rosebud Sioux land near Ideal, South Dakota to set up a spiritual camp that will serve as a key point of resistance to Keystone XL if it is approved.

04/18/14 STATIONS OF THE CROSS OF THE MARGINALIZED
Time is 1 PM and location is 39 Grove Street in Asheville. Good Friday--Take to the Streets!!! Crucifixion, the death penalty of its day, was used to publically humiliate those who crossed Rome. It was reserved for the poor, the homeless, and those who rebelled against the Roman Empire and their occupation. Jesus the homeless man from Nazareth was crossed and in the process exposed the systems of domination through the way of non-violent love. Today, people in our community continue to experience humiliation and the daily crucifixions of poverty and homelessness. Over half of our children are on free or reduced lunch. The average life expectancy of a homeless person is the age of 50. Poverty is a daily grind that causes bodily and emotional suffering. Part pilgrimage and part protest, we will walk to places in our city weaving an ancient story with our own, opposing death, and speaking out for liberation and life!

ACTIONS AND READINGS
