UNC Asheville is honored to welcome Principal Chief Michell
Hicks of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians as keynote speaker to the
forthcoming 2013-14 Native American Speaker Series. Born and raised in
Cherokee, North Carolina, Chief Hicks serves on a joint tribal, state and local
government committee focused on homeland security, and boards of the Museum of
the Cherokee Indian, the Cherokee Preservation Foundation, National Congress of
the American Indian, National Indian Gaming Association, and several other
organizations. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public
Accountants, North Carolina Certified Public Accountants and the Government
Finance Officers Association. Location is Highsmith Union, Alumni Hall at UNCA.

and Transition Asheville are sponsoring a movie called "The Age of
Stupid" at 6:55 PM at UNCA's Karpen Hall. The Age of Stupid is a 90-minute
film about climate change, set in the future. Oscar-nominated Pete
Postlethwaite stars as a man living alone in the devasted world of 2055,
looking back at “archive” footage from 2007 and asking: "Why didn’t we
stop climate change when we had the chance?"

This film covers the life of a master strategist and tireless activist. He
brought Gandhi’s protest techniques to the American civil rights movement, and

The National War Tax Resistance Coordinating Committee
(NWTRCC) will hold its National Gathering, at the Flood Fine Arts Center in the

May 3rd through the 5th featuring workshops about War Tax Resistance, panels
and keynote addresses by Cindy Sheehan and author David Swanson. A complete

David Swanson will present the keynote address on Friday May 3rd, 8pm at the

his various publications including “War is a Lie.” Cindy Sheehan's keynote
address on Saturday May 4th, 8pm at the Flood Fine Arts Center,
will detail examples of why “War Tax Resistance IS Courage” using material from
her popular podcast titled “Cindy Sheehan's Soapbox.” How to go about refusing
to pay taxes for war will be part of the program allowing for the audience to
begin thinking about alternative methods for resisting taxes going to the

PROSPECTUS
The 2013 Walk for Our Grandchildren, led by elders and
grandparents,
welcomes and encourages participation from all generations.
The walk starts on
June 15, 2013 near Camp David,
and over seven days proceeds 63 miles,
arriving at the White House on Saturday, June 22.
The walk dramatizes the need to liberate our children and
grandchildren from
fossil fuels, beginning this summer with the rejection of
the Keystone XL Pipeline.
Camp David is the point of
origin, referencing President Eisenhower naming the
retreat after his grandson David, and his work to liberate
the world from the
destructive effects of fascism, - just as we must now
mobilize to confront climate
change and liberate our children and grandchildren from
fossil fuels.

Ecology as Spiritual Practice Retreat on April 27, 2013
This retreat refocuses our practice to re-awaken justice and
compassion, both for the earth and for ourselves. The prophetic Call which
emerged from the Friends World Conference at Kabarak, Kenya
last spring unites the concerns of universalists engaged in healing the earth
with Christians concerned about the fate of “the least of these” in a time of
escalating division and earth destruction. Small group work will include
confession, forgiveness and affirmation, as well as structured dialogue with
“them” in an effort to find common ground. The leader will facilitate a Truth
Mandala (Joanna Macy) to help participants express some of their deepest
feelings about the state of the world. The workshop will include elements of
song, ritual dance and silent worship to help us reach a deeper unity.
This will be held at Asheville Friends Meeting at 227 Edgewood Road
in Asheville.
Time is 9 to 5 PM, please bring a bag lunch.
