QUOTES ON ‘OUR ENEMIES’

Photo from School of the Americas protest.

“Have we not come to such an impasse in the modern world that we must love our enemies – or else? The chain reaction of evil – hate begetting hate, wars producing more wars – must be broken, or else we shall be plunged into the dark abyss of annihilation.” ~ Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

“When will our consciences grow so tender that we will act to prevent human misery rather than avenge it?” ~ Eleanor Roosevelt

“I knew that I could never again raise my voice against the violence of the oppressed in the ghettos without having first spoken clearly to the greatest purveyor of violence in the world today — my own government. We can no longer afford to worship the god of hate or bow before the altar of retaliation. The oceans of history are made turbulent by the ever-rising tides of hate. And history is cluttered with the wreckage of nations and individuals that pursued this self-defeating path of hate.” ~ Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., “Beyond Vietnam – A Time to Break Silence” 1967

“I will mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy.” ~ Jessica Dovey

“Do I not destroy my enemies when I make them my friends?” ~ Abraham Lincoln

“It is easy enough to be friendly to one's friends. But to befriend the one who regards himself as your enemy is the quintessence of true religion. The other is mere business.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi

“Now there is a final reason I think that Jesus says, "Love your enemies." It is this: that love has within it a redemptive power. And there is a power there that eventually transforms individuals. Just keep being friendly to that person. Just keep loving them, and they can’t stand it too long. Oh, they react in many ways in the beginning. They react with guilt feelings, and sometimes they’ll hate you a little more at that transition period, but just keep loving them. And by the power of your love they will break down under the load. That’s love, you see. It is redemptive, and this is why Jesus says love. There’s something about love that builds up and is creative. There is something about hate that tears down and is destructive. So love your enemies.” ~ Martin Luther King, Jr.

QUOTES ON POVERTY

Photo from a School of the America's protest in Georgia.

“Poverty is the parent of revolution and crime.” ~ Aristotle

“When I give food to the poor, they call me a saint. When I ask why the poor have no food, they call me a communist.” ~ Helder Camara

“Poverty is the worst form of violence.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi

“The poverty of our century is unlike that of any other. It is not, as poverty was before, the result of natural scarcity, but of a set of priorities imposed upon the rest of the world by the rich. Consequently, the modern poor are not pitied...but written off as trash. The twentieth-century consumer economy has produced the first culture for which a beggar is a reminder of nothing.” ~ John Berger

“We kill at every step, not only in wars, riots, and executions. We kill when we close our eyes to poverty, suffering, and shame. In the same way all disrespect for life, all hard-heartedness, all indifference, all contempt is nothing else than killing. With just a little witty skepticism we can kill a good deal of the future in a young person. Life is waiting everywhere, the future is flowering everywhere, but we only see a small part of it and step on much of it with our feet.” ~ Hermann Hesse

“You might be poor, your shoes might be broken, but your mind is a palace.” ~ Frank McCourt

“The greatest disease in the West today is not TB or leprosy; it is being unwanted, unloved, and uncared for. We can cure physical diseases with medicine, but the only cure for loneliness, despair, and hopelessness is love. There are many in the world who are dying for a piece of bread but there are many more dying for a little love. The poverty in the West is a different kind of poverty -- it is not only a poverty of loneliness but also of spirituality. There's a hunger for love, as there is a hunger for God.” ~ Mother Teresa

“Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children. This is not a way of life at all in any true sense. Under the clouds of war, it is humanity hanging on a cross of iron.” ~ Dwight D. Eisenhower

07/10/14 SOCIAL JUSTICE MOVIE “URANIUM DRIVE-IN”
Who decides the future of rural America? The promise of jobs from a proposed uranium mill has an economically devastated mining community in Colorado hopeful for the first time in decades. When the environmentalists step in to stop the mill, the pro-mill advocates are enraged. A debate ensues, pitting jobs against health and the environment.  Without judgment, both sides of the issue are brought to life in heart-wrenching detail as the film follows conflicting opinions and visions for the future. 07/13/14 STOP FRACKED GAS EXPORTS IN DC
The first national rally to say “NO” to fracked gas exports. The natural gas industry has plans to create 15-20 export terminals around the country so that it can export fracked US gas to the rest of the world. Unfortunately for a host of reasons, once exported, this gas results in as much greenhouse gas pollution as burning coal would be. These export terminals are like the KXL pipeline, and must be stopped. CCAN(Chesapeake Climate Action Network) has been organizing to stop the Cove Point terminal on the Chesapeake Bay, which requires approval by FERC (the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission). Up to now has been a rubber stamp for the energy industry. CCAN is organizing a large protest at FERC on July 13. The nonviolent direct action (which includes risking arrest) on the 14th will be the punctuation mark to that protest. Leaders of the 2013 Walk for our Grandchildren, with support from CCAN, are organizing these two events. SHOUTOUT TO NC REPRESENTATIVE ROGER WEST FOR CLAY, CHEROKEE, GRAHAM AND MACON COUNTIES
Apparently Rep. West is of the opinion that “no one has expressed any opposition to him about fracking”.  He hasn't heard any opposition – well, it's high time he heard it then. Email him and let him know exactly how you feel about fracturing in the mountains of WNC. His email is Roger.West@ncleg.net.  He needs to hear our voices LOUD AND CLEAR!!

'BE THE CHANGE THAT YOU WISH TO SEE IN THE WORLD'
Greetings fellow Veterans For Peace and all who seek peace in our world.  That quote above, attributed to Mahatma Gandhi, isn't the theme of the 2014 Veterans for Peace convention in Asheville this July but I'm using it as an invitation to action in support of the convention. The actual theme of the convention is “PEACE OR PERISH – ABOLISH WAR ON PLANET AND POOR”.

No doubt the week of July 23 - 27 will be yet another tragic week of worldwide institutional and militaristic mayhem causing death, destruction, impoverishment and oppression, all in the pursuit of preparing for war, waging war and profiting from war. That same week in Asheville, however, will be the one place on earth where so many peace-seeking people will be gathered in community for learning, discussion, contemplation and action in direct opposition of that mayhem.

Will you be the change that you wish to see in our world?  Opportunities to act in support of this event are varied and numerous.
Could you/would you make available some space in your Asheville area home to house one or more kindred souls wishing to attend the convention, who cannot afford any other form of available housing? Let me know if you would and I'll contact you to gather some information and let you know how that would work. (Contact Gerry at gwerhan@gmail.com.)

Could you/would you serve as a volunteer in one or more of the following roles? Please note: There will be a need to fill multiple shifts and multiples of each role and there will be orientation provided to ensure you are knowledgeable and comfortable in filling the roles you volunteer for. The more volunteers we have, the more time each will have to attend the convention program events. There will also be a limited number of opportunities to volunteer for a full day and attend selected program events at a reduced rate. Please mention that if interested.
*Pedestrian Traffic Guide on campus, helping attendees get to the right places at the right times to get the most out their time among us.
*Merchandise Table Assistant, keeping items organized and secure. National VFP Representative would handle the money.
*Registration Table Assistant, warmly greeting attendees, distributing registration packets, providing information. National VFP Representative would handle money and related registration details.
*"Go-fer"
*Workshop Assistant, helping presenters with some clerical tasks to free them up to do their work as effectively as possible.
*Driver - We'll have two 15 passenger vans in use during the convention to help meet the various transportation needs of our attendees as best we can and when other transportation options won't do.

Could you/would you serve on our Person-to-Person Contact Team? As we receive registrations (already happening) we'd like to have Chapter 99 members, and others in the local progressive community, send an email as soon as possible to each registrant in the spirit of welcome, assistance and fellowship that we'd hope would build community leading up to the convention, during the convention and beyond. Please note: I will provide you with the basic content of the email, to which you can add your personal touch. All of these opportunities offer the potential for personal demonstration of a commitment to peace in our world in meaningful and practical ways. It's my hope that I'll be overwhelmed with responses and have the opportunity to work with you to help you show that commitment, especially as representatives of the Asheville area, progressive and VFP community. Please email me to let me know how you want to help. For those reading this that have already volunteered, please let me know if you have a preference for any of the roles described above. Also, please forward this email to your like-minded friends, family and organizational contacts to ensure that they, too, have this singular opportunity to “Be the Change That They Wish to see in the World”.

Thanks,
Semper Fidelis et Pacificus

QUOTES ON HOPE

I took this photo at a School of the America's protest a few years back.

“We are not going in circles, we are going upwards. The path is a spiral; we have already climbed many steps.”  ~ Hermann Hesse

“Your soul knows the geography of your destiny. Your soul alone has the map of your future, therefore you can trust this indirect, oblique side of yourself. If you do, it will take you where you need to go, but more important it will teach you a kindness of rhythm in your journey.”  ~ John O’Donohue

“You can build walls all the way to the sky and I will find a way to fly above them. You can try to pin me down with a hundred thousand arms, but I will find a way to resist.” ~ Lauren Oliver

“It's the action, not the fruit of the action, that's important. You have to do the right thing. It may not be in your power, may not be in your time, that there'll be any fruit. But that doesn't mean you stop doing the right thing. You may never know what results come from your action. But if you do nothing, there will be no result.” ― Mahatma Gandhi

“If you are depressed, you are living in the past. If you are anxious, you are living in the future. If you are at peace, you are living in the present.” – Lao Tzu

QUOTES ON RACISM

Photo from UFPJ.

“The civility of no race can be perfect whilst another race is degraded. It is a doctrine alike of the oldest and of the newest philosophy, that man is one, and that you cannot injure any member, without a sympathetic injury to all the members.” ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

“As you grow older, you'll see white men cheat black men every day of your life, but let me tell you something and don't you forget it - whenever a white man does that to a black man, no matter who he is, how rich he is, or how fine a family he comes from, he is trash.” ~ Harper Lee, To Kill A Mockingbird

“Hating people because of their color is wrong. And it doesn't matter which color does the hating. It's just plain wrong.” ~ Muhammad Ali

“Our true nationality is mankind.” ~ H.G. Wells

“Ignorance and prejudice are the handmaidens of propaganda. Our mission, therefore, is to confront ignorance with knowledge, bigotry with tolerance, and isolation with the outstretched hand of generosity. Racism can, will, and must be defeated.” ~ Kofi Annan

“I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality.... I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word.” ~ Martin Luther King Jr.

NO MORE U.S. WAR ON IRAQ

NO MORE U.S. WAR ON IRAQ
UNITY STATEMENT & CALL FOR ACTION

Again and again, the U.S. government chooses the disaster of war that creates a never-ending cycle of tragedy.  Today's escalating crisis in Iraq is a direct result of the illegal U.S.-led invasion and occupation of that country.  The U.S. government used the false pretext of eliminating "weapons of mass destruction," to mask a grab for power and oil.  The result was the brutal murder of more than a million Iraqis, the deaths of thousands of U.S. soldiers, the creation of millions of refugees, over a trillion dollars spent, and the destabilization of an entire region. Today, the U.S. government considers sending more ground troops, renewed air strikes, drone attacks, Special Ops forces, privatized troops, arms shipments, and other covert operations, while it is hard-pressed to identify its allies and its military and political aims.  We say No!  Military intervention has not worked to bring peace; the bitter cycle must end.

We Call for:
Immediate withdrawal of all U.S. military and non-military forces from Iraq
No military intervention – troops, bombs, drones, covert operations, arms
Money for Jobs and Education, Not for War and Incarceration
Say No to War in Iraq actions – vigils, demonstrations, rallies, forums, media, petitions, lobbying
Emergency day-after actions if the US starts air strikes

Four facts you need to know

Photo from Facebook.

From ANSWER:

1. The Iraq war killed millions; the politicians responsible are still walking free.

From 1991 to 2003, U.S. bombing and sanctions took one million Iraqi lives, including 500,000 children. Between the years 2003 – 2011, the U.S. war took another one million Iraqi lives. Five million were made refugees. Tens of thousands of U.S. soldiers were killed or wounded. The U.S. policymakers, the war criminals who carried out this human atrocity, are still walking free and giving speeches and raking in millions of dollars in book deals.

2. The U.S. invasion and occupation is what caused the present situation.

The present civil conflict in Iraq is a result of the U.S. war and occupation, which destroyed the Iraqi government and divided the country along sectarian lines in order to conquer it. This reversed Iraq long history of secularism, and the coexistence and intermarrying among its diverse communities. Islamic extremist forces were practically non-existent in Iraq until the Pentagon invaded.

3. The Iraqi people OPPOSE U.S. intervention.

Huge numbers of Iraqis fought the U.S. occupation. While the sectarian Iraqi government led by Maliki has requested U.S. intervention, that is the last thing that the majority of Iraqi people want.

4. The Pentagon and Wall St. want to control Iraq, not help it.

Millions of people protested Bush’s war. It was built on lies. Iraq was no threat and had no connection to the 9/11 attacks. It was a war for oil, profit and control. The same war criminals are now calling for new U.S. attacks in Iraq and escalating the war against the independent government of Syria. Don’t fall for their lies!
