Occupy the Holidays!!

This photo is of a billboard in Hendersonville, and was taken by Andy and put on Facebook.  Please note how it says "shop locally" in the air - that is not part of the billboard. I see no evidence that it is part of their events. But they are using the OCCUPY logo that was used in Hendersonville and Asheville and a whole lot of other places. And you may not see it, but the word "Holiday" is crossed out and the word "Christmas" is emphasized.

This group has absolutely nothing to do with the Occupy movement, even though they claim otherwise. There was a discussion on Facebook as to whether or not it is acceptable to use the word "OCCUPY" in that format, but I don't see how there is anything that can be done to stop them. The main objection that people had was that they were using "OCCUPY" to promote one religion (Christianity) and exclude others (everyone else). Their website clearly shows it is strictly Christian.

So, I don't know if these folks have gotten their panties in a wad over the so-called 'WAR ON CHRISTMAS' but I suspect so, since they marked out "Holiday" on their billboard. And that is something that I HAVE NO PATIENCE FOR AT ALL. It is beyond ridiculous to think that Christians are being prosecuted in this country in any way, shape or form. It is quite the opposite - they are the center of attention and they take up nearly all the space available. They are the ones who are forcing their beliefs and religion on other people. They are the ones all in a huff if you say "Happy Holidays" to them. Apparently, the teachings of Jesus Christ have made exactly NO impression on them, or they would NEVER get their panties in a wad over something so trivial and silly. If they cannot "turn the other cheek" to a sincere well-meaning greeting, then they are as far from being real Christians as anyone can get. I would bet that they are further confused about the true meaning of Christmas, which is not buying fancy sweaters to show off, giving presents to kids, having prizes and competitions, or singing songs. But boy, they sure do love to whine!!!!!!

A child with amazing eyes

I said: what about my eyes?
God said: Keep them on the road.
I said: what about my passion?
God said: Keep it burning.
I said: what about my heart?
God said: Tell me what you hold inside it?
I said: pain and sorrow?
He said: Stay with it.
The wound is the place where the Light enters you.

Appeal from Veterans for Peace

This came out before a cease-fire was called.

+++++++++++++++++++++
**Veterans For Peace Appeals to Israeli Soldiers to Lay Down Their Arms**

Israel's military has in recent days attacked the Gaza strip with drones and F-16s, and has apparently been preparing for a possible ground war. Israel is using weaponry provided by the United States at the expense to U.S. taxpayers of $3 billion per year.  Veterans For Peace member Doug Rawlings addresses the following statement to members of the Israeli
military:
I have been to where you are going.  From my heart, I beseech you not to join me.  In 1969, I was sent to Vietnam as a reluctant soldier, a draftee, who did not have the courage of my convictions.  I chose to follow the orders of my government rather than to follow the dictates of my conscience.  It’s been over forty years now, and I still remember the faces of the Vietnamese people who were victimized by my lack of moral autonomy. I became one of Pharaoh’s army, and, to this day, I have been wading through the miasma of that murderous indecisiveness.  Had I heeded Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. instead of General William Westmoreland, I would have refused to serve as a pawn in my government’s immoral invasion and occupation of Vietnam.
Westmoreland was one of many who appealed to some kind of base sense of national self-righteousness that relegated a whole people the “enemy” -- to a form of sub-human existence.  He, too, heard from chauvinist generals like yours who demanded that we “bomb the Vietnamese people back to the Stone Age.”  Dr. King, on the other hand, was imploring us to not exploit others, to recognize the sacredness of all people, and to not “trample over others with the iron feet of oppression.” He recognized that “peace is not
merely a distant goal we seek, but a means by which we arrive at that goal. We must pursue peaceful ends through peaceful means.”

You, my friends, have become the means of your government, and it is up to you to say that you would rather be warriors for peace than serve in Pharaoh’s legions. Follow the lead of the Dr. Kings of the world, not the generals who are willing to use the blood of others to seek some kind of political goals. Rejoin the ‘beloved community’ of world citizens who recognize the sanctity of all human life.  Reject the immoral orders of those who would send you to do their bloody bidding.  Refuse orders to attack Gaza. The world is waiting for the first army of peace-makers to turn back the tide of war.  Why not start with you?

Veterans For Peace is a national organization, founded in 1985 with approximately 5,000 members in 150 chapters located in every U.S. state and several countries.  It is a 501(c)3 non-profit educational organization recognized as a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) by the United Nations, and is the only national veterans' organization calling for the abolishment of war.

Very scary. Vertical power is always threatened by people power, i.e., threatened by actual democracy. And in the same interview, Wilkerson says what is happening in the USA with the power of the military is that it is more dangerous than a traditional coup:
"But the insidious increase in power, and the influence over foreign policy that the military has, is very dangerous. And maybe in the long run it's even more dangerous than a coup. Because what happens is, the power shifts gradually, and gradually, and incrementally, over to the war making side, to where you wake up one morning and all you're doing is making war. And you have so many people, from Lockheed Martin to the Congress of the United States, to the Armed Forces, to you name it, who are making so much money off that war making, that you can' t stop it. That's not a coup, but it is something worse in my view." - Wilkerson

Soldiers of Peace

Soldiers of peace are not fighting a war
Are not looking for enemies behind every door
Are not looking for people to kill or to maim.
Soldiers of peace are just changing the game.

Men who were fighting for all of our lives
Are now fighting for children, for homes and for wives,
Fighting for the memory of all who fell before,
But the soldiers of peace just can't kill any more.

So come all you warriors who live for the fight,
Come listen to somebody, somebody who might
Have been there before you and they have the right,
They've been dying to tell you the score.
The old warriors don't want you to hurt any more.

Soldiers of peace can still hear the cries
When the people were screaming and losing their lives,
When bodies were broken and spirits were torn
The soldiers of peace do not want you to mourn.

So come all you warriors who live for the fight,
Come listen to somebody, somebody who might
Have been there before you and they have the right,
They've been dying to tell you the score.
The old warriors don't want you to hurt any more.

Soldiers of peace are not fighting a war.
No more, no more, no more, no more.

Veterans Day 2012

U.S. Marine Corps Major General Smedley Butler, lamenting his career, said,
I spent 33 years and four months in active military service and during that period I spent most of my time as a high class muscle man for Big Business, for Wall Street and the bankers. In short, I was a racketeer, a gangster for capitalism. I helped make Mexico and especially Tampico safe for American oil interests in 1914. I helped make Haiti and Cuba a decent place for the National City Bank boys to collect revenues in. I helped in the raping of half a dozen Central American republics for the benefit of Wall Street. I helped purify Nicaragua for the International Banking House of Brown Brothers in 1902–1912. I brought light to the Dominican Republic for the American sugar interests in 1916. I helped make Honduras right for the American fruit companies in 1903. In China in 1927 I helped see to it that Standard Oil went on its way unmolested. Looking back on it, I might have given Al Capone a few hints. The best he could do was to operate his racket in three districts. I operated on three continents.

Two Poems from Guantanamo

Hunger Strike Poem – by Adnan Farhan Abdul Latif

They are artists of torture,
They are artists of pain and fatigue,
They are artists of insults and humiliation.
Where is the world to save us from torture?
Where is the world to save us from fire and sadness?
Where is the world to save the hunger strikers?

The US military censored the rest of this poem.

Humiliated in the Shackles – by Sami al Haj

When I heard pigeons cooing in the trees,
Hot tears covered my face.
When the lark chirped, my thoughts composed
A message for my son.

Mohammad, I am afflicted.
In my despair, I have no one but Allah for comfort.
The oppressors are playing with me,
As they move freely about the world.

They ask me to spy on my countrymen,
Claiming it would be a good deed.
They offer me money and land,
And freedom to go where I please.

Their temptations seize my attention
Like lightning in the sky.
But their gift is an evil snake,
Carry hypocrisy in its mouth like venom.

They have monuments to liberty
And freedom of opinion, which is well and good.
But I explained to them that
Architecture is not justice.

America, you ride on the backs of orphans,
And terrorize them daily.
Bush, beware.

The world recognizes an arrogant liar.
To Allah I direct my grievance and my tears.
I am homesick and oppressed.
Mohammad, do not forget me.

Support the cause of your father, a God-fearing man.
I was humiliated in the shackles.
How can I now compose verses? How can I now write?
After the shackles and the nights and the suffering and the tears,
How can I write poetry?

My soul is like a roiling sea, stirred by anguish,
Violent with passion.

I am a captive, but the crimes are my captors'.
I am overwhelmed with apprehension.
Lord, unite me with my son Mohammad.
Lord, grant success to the righteous.

Sami al Haj was finally released and he re-joined his family. It is hard to believe that this evil still continues today.

Comment from FCNL

Assassination: A Permanent Foreign Policy?

By Bridget Moix on 11/02/2012 @ 05:37 PM
Tags: Drones, Weapons

The below is a guest post by former FCNL legislative secretary Bridget Moix.

The title of the article alone should have sent us all straight to FCNL’s legislative action center to write a letter of protest to our members of Congress. “Plan for hunting terrorists signals U.S. intends to keep adding names to kill lists,” the October 23, Washington Post headline read, the latest in its “Permanent War” series. My stomach turned as I read. “Hunting”? “Kill lists”? Is this really how far our foreign policy has fallen?

No. It’s worse actually.

The article, which should be required reading for every member of Congress, goes on to describe how the U.S. government is developing a new “disposition matrix”, a high-tech database designed to go beyond current kill lists and drone strikes to more deeply institutionalize the policy and practice of targeted killing “for the long haul”, with little to no accountability or transparency.

There was a time when such a report would have led to public outrage and congressional hearings, when assassination was not publicly acceptable as a tool of U.S. foreign policy (even if it was still covertly practiced), and when the thought of it violated our fundamental understanding of democracy and rule of law, as well as our national moral conscience.

But no longer. The global war on terror begun by the Bush administration and fervently pursued in modified form under Obama has permeated nearly every aspect of our national life and, according to the Post article, is only reaching its “midpoint.” So, never mind Iraq and Afghanistan, we’ve got at least 10 more years of killing ahead of us, and now we’ve got a fancy global database to make it easier. Thank you, U.S. taxpayers.

In fact, the policies and practices now being institutionalized as core parts of U.S. foreign policy – from kill lists to drone strikes to this new, all-too Hollywoodesque “matrix” – would have once turned the stomachs of most Americans and sparked at least congressional debate if not legislative restraining action. Governments that practiced assassination were once shunned because voters and decision-makers alike understood that such policies threaten national and global security, fuel violence and attacks, waste enormous amounts of taxpayer dollars, undermine the rule of law, and violate our moral conscience. If one government, no matter how powerful, decides it can kill who it wants, where and when it wants, what’s to stop other countries from deciding they can as well?

Unfortunately, policymakers and the public seem to be forgetting that history, replacing it with a new “all war, all the time” mentality that is driving U.S. foreign policy – straight into the ground. Assassination as foreign policy has become not only acceptable, but largely accepted by the U.S. public and Congress. Permanent war is becoming the norm. U.S. government officials pride themselves on how many “terrorists” have been killed on their watch; presidential candidates argue over who will be the best at targeted killing. Most worrisome, few in the public and even fewer in Congress stand up in protest.

So what’s the antidote to permanent war mentality and high-tech matrix assassination? Forgive me for repeating myself, but, we are. Concerned citizens like us who still become disgusted and outraged by articles that tell us our government is engaging in such immoral and ineffective policies, and who write letters, visit our members of Congress, and urge policymakers to institutionalize peaceful prevention of deadly conflict, not permanent war. No database, drone, or kill list can yet compete with the power of individual conscience and human relationship.

And after all, if we don’t do it, who will?

Comment from five years ago

Comment (somewhat updated) made on 11/7/07 on Iraq Today blog.

Whenever we put these posts together, we do read a lot.  And a great deal of it is confusing.  I have read that America invented al Qaeda, al Qaeda is the true Iraqi resistance, and al Qaeda is run and funded by Saudi Arabia.  I read that the Kurds causing trouble for the Turks are actually Turkish Kurds.  I read the US is really running the PKK.  I read about tribes in Iraq turning on al Qaeda - but it seems to me that they are fighting US troops LESS not because they turned on al Qaeda, but because the US is paying them off (I am all for that, by the way, although it does have it's problems).

I remember the US military saying their policy was to "villainize Zarqawi, leverage xenophobic response"-- which just makes me sick to think they have (had?) a policy of making ordinary people afraid.  But of course, that was the whole point behind "shock and awe" wasn't it?

So, would they invent al Qaeda?  Is Sy Hersch right in claiming that the bush administration is arming and funding Sunni extremist groups in parts of the Middle East?  I think so.  But there are a few things that are true - I know they are true – in this post.  First, is the picture of the ordinary man calling his family to reassure them.  That is (or was) 95% of Iraqi people.  And a couple more true things are in the articles under COMMENTARY below.

Americans are willfully ignorant.

And, we are also a nation of people deep in denial - we have a new candidate for Attorney General who cannot figure out if torture is torture - or if it is illegal.  And that is because about 40% of our willfully ignorant nation supports torture.  They stupidly believe that it will give us good information, and excuse it on that ground.  And then there is a small minority who are just sick sadistic fucks.  And lately, we have the myth being pushed by our politicians that the occupation of Iraq was a noble endeavor, with great sacrifice and bravery by our US troops, that was just mismanaged AND/OR ruined by the ingrate Iraqis.  In short, our intentions are good and our actions are benign (or we try our best to be benign).

THIS IS A FUCKING LIE.

I recently came across articles from Rep. Waxman asking if was worth it to have US troops die for Mylaki's corruption..... with no mention of the corruption and plunder done by US citizens and troops in Iraq, which is vastly worse.  I often here or read about US Democratic candidates talking about how our "brave" and "unselfish" troops are just being asked to do too much, and do it under incompetent leadership (meaning Bush - they
never see their own part in it - they too are willfully ignorant).  They never seem to notice the Iraqi people and how many of them are suffering from the presence of US troops in their country.  I really recommend reading the articles under the COMMENTARY (link above) in full.

And I wonder if American society can ever be stopped from all this militarism and war-mongering and human rights abuses -  in short, from all this EVIL.

I really wonder.

COMMENTARY

Michael Massing has written a very important story about at very important truth: the main reason that the American people are so deeply uninformed about the reality of the war of aggression being waged in their names in Iraq is that they do not want to know.

Massing shows that the rigorous self-censorship practiced by the American people and the media is actually worse than the machinations of Big Brother in Orwell's 1984; at least in that fictional world, the draconian repression of reality was imposed by force at the hands of an all-powerful state – but today we are doing it to ourselves. Not that the Bush Regime isn't giving Big Brotherism the old college try, but as Massing points out, there are too many venues and formats of information dissemination for the state to control it all, especially in the United States, where many vestiges of freedom remain. Yet one of the most disheartening aspects of American society today is how very little use the people make of those freedoms they still have.

Indeed, Massing's observations on Americans' self-censorship – the surrender of the awareness of reality in exchange for self-regarding fantasy – have implications far beyond war reportage. In our time, we are witnessing a society voluntarily surrendering its liberties, its rights – its gumption – to a harsh and malevolent authority. We are
witnessing a society surrendering its pride and its moral core to torturers and thieves, liars and killers. And it is a willing surrender, as if vast swathes of the American people are relieved that they can finally lay down the burdens and responsibilities of freedom.

We are the Thought Police

Orwell's Big Brother never showed up. Instead of centralized Iraq war propaganda, we have an America in which the public and the press jointly impose their own controls.
……How can such a critical feature of the U.S. occupation remain so hidden from view? Because most Americans don't want to know about it.  The books by Iraqi vets are filled with expressions of disbelief and rage at the lack of interest ordinary Americans show for what they've had to endure on the battlefield. In "Operation Homecoming," one returning Marine, who takes to drinking heavily in an effort to cope with the crushing guilt and revulsion he feels over how many people he's seen killed, fumes about how "you can't talk to them [ordinary Americans] about the horror of a dead child's lifeless mutilated body staring back at you from the void, knowing you took part in that end."

Writing of her return home, Kayla Williams notes that the things most people seemed interested in were "beyond my comprehension. Who cared about Jennifer Lopez? How was it that I was watching CNN one morning and there was a story about freaking ducklings being fished out of a damn sewer drain -- while the story of soldiers getting killed in Iraq got relegated to this little banner across the bottom of the screen?"  In "Generation Kill," by the journalist Evan Wright, a Marine corporal confides his anguish and anger over all the killings he has seen: "I think it's bullshit how these fucking civilians are dying! They're worse off than the guys that are shooting at us. They don't even have a chance. Do you think people at home are going to see this – all these women and children we're killing? Fuck no. Back home they're glorifying this motherfucker, I guarantee you."

…..In most wars, nations that send their men and women off to fight in distant lands don't want to learn too much about the violence being committed in their name. Facing up to this would cause too much shame, would deal too great a blow to national self-esteem. If people were to become too aware of the butchery wars entail, they would become much
less willing to fight them. And so the illusion must be maintained that war is a noble enterprise, that the soldiers who wage it are full of valor and heroism, that in the end their intentions are good and their actions benign.

Meet the Idiot Press, Six Years Ago

From Meet the Press on 11/5/06:

>SEN. ELIZABETH DOLE (R-NC): You know, I think what this shows is that the Iraqis are putting their past behind them, the establishment of the rule of law. I feel that, you know, this, this will mean they’re moving forward.  Certainly, a madman who had, in his focus, the preparation of nuclear weapons, this will, I think, be received as the right thing, and you know, I don’t expect that it’s going to, to have that much effect one way or the other.<

She sure says “you know” a lot – funny coming from someone who (apparently) doesn’t know what she is talking about.

>SEN. DOLE: Let me, let me talk about David Fromme, who is one of the people in the article, and his concern about the way it was publicized, the press release. David Fromme’s bottom line is, the war, just as the same—the same as in 2003, the war was right, we need to win the war and it would be disastrous to lose. That’s his bottom line. That’s, that’s what he’s concerned about. And you know, it’s almost as if the Democrats, you know, it’s like they’re content with losing because to pull out, to withdraw from this war is losing. No question about it. You look at...

MR. RUSSERT: The Democrats are content with losing.

SEN. DOLE: The Democrats appear to be content with losing because
they’re to...<

Well, Mrs. Dole, it was the REPUBLICAN congress and REPUBLICAN president that started and conducted this war, not the Democrats.  So the Democrats were not in charge of “losing” at all – that is something you and your buddies did all by yourself.

>SEN. DOLE: ...because when you pull out, this is losing. That we know that it becomes a breeding ground.....a breeding ground for terrorists. We’ve got Iran and Syria sitting there on each side of Iraq.<

And of course, the current Iraq war, as it is being run, is just a breeding ground for hope, peace, democracy and stability, and certainly not more terrorism.

RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT………

Notice how she went from blaming the Democrats to starting to blame Syria and Iran?  It’s always someone else’s fault with Mrs. Dole and her companions.  Now, if the Bush administration decides to negotiate with the countries of Syria and Iran, then one would suspect that Mrs. Dole’s head would explode - along with all the other idiots who believe that they should blame everyone except the guilty parties for the mess in Iraq THAT THEY CREATED ALL BY THEMSELVES!!!
