12/03/13 SPHERE COMMUNICATION
Politics. Sex. Drugs. STDs. Money. Death. Families.
Parenting. Emotional blackmail. Race. Divorce. Relationships. Love. Mathematics.
What else sometimes makes us... tense... to talk about at precisely the time
when we really need to be as relaxed as possible? This five-week workshop is
designed to provide attendees with new skills that improve their ability to
work effectively with others in face-to-face settings, whether personally or
professionally. The techniques are helpful even when the environment may appear
contentious, or even hostile. Using the analogy of a musical performing group,
each participant will learn more about their natural strengths and weaknesses
(their "instrument"), they can experiment with new ways of
interacting, and will practice simple assignments throughout the week, after
which they can share their experiences with the other participants, learn from
one another and integrate their developing skills in a group setting. Cost:
Bring an amount you would pay for a really good musical performance. Leave
whatever you thought it was worth at the end! Firestorm Café and Books, 5
week series, starts at 3 PM.

follow early next year.
12/13/13 SOCIAL
JUSTICE FILM AT UNITARIAN
UNIVERSALIST CHURCH
The December film will be the award-winning film
"Gasland, Part II". The time is 7 PM and the location is
Unitarian Universalist church at Edwin and Charlotte Street in Asheville. In this explosive follow-up to his
Oscar®-nominated film GASLAND, filmmaker Josh Fox uses his trademark dark humor
to take a deeper, broader look at the dangers of hydraulic fracturing, or
fracking, the controversial method of extracting natural gas and oil, now occurring
on a global level (in 32 countries worldwide). GASLAND PART II, which premiered
at the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival, shows how the stakes have been raised on all
sides in one of the most important environmental issues facing our nation
today. The film argues that the gas industry’s portrayal of natural gas as a
clean and safe alternative to oil is a myth and that fracked wells inevitably
leak over time, contaminating water and air, hurting families, and endangering
the earth’s climate with the potent greenhouse gas, methane. In addition the
film looks at how the powerful oil and gas industries are in Fox's words
"contaminating our democracy". Donations accepted.
