For the second year, Appalachian State University will host Social Justice Week – a series of 35 events dedicated to addressing some of the world’s most pressing social/human rights issues.The goal is to educate and to inspire action. More than 50 participating organizations are helping sponsor the discussions, films, service activities, art projects, trainings and more.Social Justice Week grew from one student’s idea. 03/24/14 to 03/27/14 EXHIBIT ON ‘REMEMBERING RAVENSBRUCK’
The Center For Diversity Education at UNCA is hosting an exhibit from Kennesaw State University Holocaust Museum called “Remembering Ravensbrück: Women and the Holocaust” from March 3 - March 27. Remembering Ravensbrück is on display at UNC Asheville in Karpen Lobby from 8:00 - 8:00 PM through March 27 during week days and is supported by WNC Jewish Federation. 03/24/14 to 03/31/14 BLACK VAUDEVILLE EXHIBIT AT YMI CULTURAL CENTER
The YMI Cultural Center will feature the female performers of the “Chitlin' Circuit”, the collective name given to the string of performance venues for African American performers in the segregated South. The program includes a documentary about vaudeville comedian Jackie “Moms” Mabley, a Brevard NC native. The exhibit created was created by local Asheville High School graduate Kelly'e West. Admission is Free. Hours are Tuesday-Friday from 11:30 AM to 4 PM. Other hours by request.

03/24/14 WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH PRESENTATION AT UNCA
Using only Etty Hillesum's words, Susan Stein's adaptation brings us to 1943 when Etty, a young Jewish woman, is about to be deported out of Holland. As she prepares for the three day journey eastward, she digs deeper into her soul to understand this piece of history and root out any hatred or bitterness, believing that humanity is the best and only solution for survival. Etty's words, insights and beliefs reach out from the Holocaust and allow us to see the power of hope and individual thought in the most extreme circumstances. This program is part of Women's History Month and the exhibit on Women and the Holocaust now showing in Karpen Lobby. (This date was listed incorrectly in the newspaper as March 25. 03/25/14 DISCUSSION ON WOMEN’S ISSUES
In preparation for writer, activist and poet Robin Morgan's April 3rd visit to UNC Asheville, Dr. Lori Horvitz, Director of UNC Asheville’s Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies Program, will moderate two intergenerational discussions/workshops about feminism’s past, present and future. A short packet of writing by Morgan will be sent to participants. Tuesday, March 25th/Room 206 of the Reuter Center 7 PM – 9 PM April 3rd, Humanities Lecture Hall 7 PM Robin Morgan Robin Morgan is an American poet, author, political theorist and activist, journalist, lecturer. Since the early 1960s she has been a key feminist member of the American Women's Movement, and a leader in the international feminist movement. Her 1970 anthology 'Sisterhood Is Powerful' has been widely credited with helping to start the general women's movement in the US, and was cited by the New York Public Library as 'One of the 100 most influential Books of the 20th Century,' along with those of Sigmund Freud and Karl Marx. She has written more than 20 books of poetry, fiction, and nonfiction, and is also known as the editor of Ms. Magazine. This event is free and open to the public. 03/25/14 NATIVE AMERICAN SPEAKER AND PERFORMANCE SERIES
Warriors of AniKituhwa, Cultural Ambassadors of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, will present at 12:30 PM at the University Quad (Rain/snow location- Highsmith Union, Alumni Hall). Designated as official cultural ambassadors by the Tribal Council of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, The Warriors of AniKituhwa, a Cherokee dance group, have been making history by recreating Cherokee dances described in 1762, including the War Dance and the Eagle Tail dance. They are revitalizing Cherokee dance by bringing back other dances from the past, by doing research, and by offering dance workshops for their community. The Warriors of AniKituhwa educate people about the significance of their dances, their clothing, and Cherokee history and culture. Free and open to the public. The People's Group is the new way to take action at Just Economics! Community members come together, enjoy dinner and conversation, then learn and take action on a common struggle. March's Focused Action: Moving from the ISOLATION created by income inequality into COMMUNITY built on support and mutual aid! 03/25/14 ASHEVILLE CITY COUNCIL CLEAN ENERGY PROCLAMATION
Come to the Asheville City Council meeting and see Katie Bray, director of Solarize Asheville and the new, broader program Clean Energy for Us, accept a proclamation for Clean Energy for Us Awareness Day. This is a tribute to Katie and the many volunteers and participants in Solarize Asheville, who are modeling a new, cleaner way to generate electricity. Join us Wednesday March 26th at 6 PM at the Green Sage Coffeehouse and Café in downtown Asheville for a presentation about Progressive Utilization Theory by Mirra Price, Ramesh Bjonnes, and J. Geoffrey Steen. In this interactive and participatory workshop, several Proutists (students of the Progressive Utilization Theory) will explore PROUT’s unique contributions to the conversation of moving towards a more fair and just socio-economic system. Ramesh Bjonnes will discuss economic restructuring to achieve a decentralized economy. Mirra Price will address specific needs of marginalized groups to achieve full inclusion in the new economy. J. Geoffrey Steen will speak about cooperative agriculture. Presenters will feature PROUTistic solutions to chronic unemployment, excessive private wealth accumulation, and gender, racial and psychological oppression. The workshop will conclude with a discussion of policy implications that would guarantee everyone’s minimum necessities as we explore next steps in our collective liberation from corporate greed and domination. The Green Sage Coffeehouse and Cafe is transitioning into their winter hours. They will close to the public at 5 PM but will still offer Green Drinks attendees food service until 5:30 PM. A chamber music theatre work for actress and trio (cello, piano & percussion) celebrating the lives and times of four significant African American Women: ex-slave and fiery abolitionist Sojourner Truth, renowned novelist and anthropologist Zora Neale Hurston, exuberant folk artist Clementine Hunter and fervent civil rights worker Fannie Lou Hamer. The musical score is drawn from the heartfelt spirituals of the Deep South, the urban exuberance of the Jazz Age and concert music by African American composers including Diane Monroe. 04/01/14 VOTER REGISTRATION TRAINING
Our next general meeting of the Mountain People's Assembly will be focused on organizing a voter registration drive from April 2-April 11 in low-income and marginalized communities. Voters have to be registered by April 11th to participate in the primaries. Voter registration, voter education, and GOTV efforts have been identified as a primary focus for the Mountain People's Assembly and is in line with a major focus of HKonJ (our statewide affiliate that began the Moral Monday movement). We are working to combat the effects of the unjust voter suppression legislation that was passed in the NCGA in 2013. We will be in Lord Auditorium for this important meeting and organizing event. This is a Call to Action to join Mountain People’s Assembly on April 1, 2014 for Voter Registration training. This is a major push to get our volunteers ready to properly register voters to be eligible to participate in the Primary on May 6, 2014. The deadline to register is April 11. Sponsors of this event are Quaker House and the National Association of Social Workers. This is a training program enabling participants to deal with potentially violent situations in new and creative ways. This is an experiential learning model that is valuable for Social Workers, Counselors, Psychologists, Clergy, Court Counselors, Teachers, School Counselors, Case Managers, Military Personnel, Law Enforcement, Substance Abuse Professionals, Physicians, Nurses and other members of the behavioral health and health care providers community. 04/05/14 RALLY AND VIGIL TO STOP DEPORTATIONS
On April 5th join us along with others from Western North Carolina to unite as a community and let the president know that we have had enough with his lack of action. Immigrant communities all over the country will lift up and let their voices be heard on this NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION, specifically toward one person that has the authority to stop deportations, our President. Every day 1,400 people are being deported in the United States and in April it’s estimated that that number will reach 2 million people, under President Obama. These are 2 million families that have been separated, 2 million children left without their parents, 2 million are 2 many immigrant hermanos that are being deported simply because they are working for a better future for their families. Join us with people from the Western North Carolina and others all over the country to let the President know that he has the authority and he has to act now!! Candidates for District Court Judge, District Attorney, and Clerk of Superior Court in the upcoming May primary will debate at the Buncombe County Judicial Complex on Friday, April 11 at 4 pm. There will be three separate debates, featuring candidates for District Court Judge, District Attorney, and Superior Court Clerk. Retired Judge Gary Cash will be the moderator, and the event will be open to the public. The debate is sponsored by the 28th Judicial District Bar, with the assistance of the Criminal Defense Bar. Time is 4 PM and location is Buncombe County Judicial Complex. Questions may be submitted by members of the Bar to the Bar Administrator, by email at admin@28thJDB.com. Please note if your question is for the District Attorney’s race, the District Court Judge race, or the Superior Court Clerk’s race. The Bar Administrator will collect the questions, removing only the sender’s name, and send them on to Judge Cash. At the debate, candidates will be introduced by name only. Questions will be asked by the moderator, and responses limited to two minutes. A rebuttal to the original question may be offered by the opposing candidate, but this will be limited to one minute. The moderator may ask follow-up questions, and the audience may submit written follow-up questions to the moderator.

04/15/14 WILD AND SCENIC FILM FESTIVAL
Join us as the largest environmental film festival in the United States comes to Western North Carolina! The Western North Carolina Alliance presents the Wild & Scenic Environmental Film Festival, on tour in Asheville during the week leading up to Earth Day! It is a festival by activists and for activists. For thirty years, WNCA has been a building a community to protect and restore the forests and rivers of our home. The Wild & Scenic Film Festival puts our work–and yours–into the broader environmental and social context, and serves to remind us that we’re participants in a global movement for a more wild and scenic world. “A Bottle in the Gaza Sea” will be shown at the Fine Arts Theater in downtown Asheville. Tal is a 17-year-old French woman who has settled in Jerusalem with her family. She writes a letter expressing her refusal to accept that only hatred can reign between Israelis and Palestinians. She slips the letter into a bottle, and her brother throws it into the sea near Gaza, where he is carrying out his military service. A few weeks later, Tal receives an e-mail response from a mysterious “Gazaman,” a young Palestinian named Naïm. And thus begins a turbulent but tender long-distance friendship between two young people that are separated by a history they are trying both to understand and change. Based on the award-winning novel by Valérie Zenatti. All tickets $8.50. Time is 7 PM.

NATIONAL VETERANS FOR PEACE CONVENTION TO BE HELD IN ASHEVILLE AT UNCA FROM 07/24/14 TO 07/27/14.


DEADLINE  For Workshop Applications is April 1, 2014. The theme of this year's convention is Peace or Perish Abolish War on Planet and Poor.  Keep the theme in mind as you plan your workshop presentations. Applications can be submitted online or by downloading a copy of the application and sending via snail mail. (Go to link above.) Those submitting an application will be notified if they have been accepted by April 31, 2014. Workshop presenters are expected to register for the convention, pay for their room/board and provide their own transportation to/from the convention.
