03/16/15 EXHIBIT AT UNCA
“In Her Father's Eyes: A Slovak Childhood in the Shadow of the Holocaust” will be on display from March 2 to March 27 at UNCA. The year 2015 marks the 70th anniversaries of the end of WWII when the slave labor and death camps were liberated. In Her Father's Eyes is the life of Kitty Weichherz told by her observant and devoted father Bella Weichherz. Family photographs and entries in a diary kept by Bella offer a window into the everyday life of birthday parties, the first day of school, and a first boyfriend. The Weichherz family were murdered sometime in 1942 or 43 most likely at Sobibor Death Camp. Location is Karpen Hall. Contact Deborah at dmiles@unca.edu for more information.

MountainTrue’s Southern Regional Office Recycling Committee will host its next meeting at 4:30 PM on March 18 in our conference room at 611 N. Church St., Hendersonville. The main presenter will be Ken Allison from the proposed Regional Recycling Solutions Center planned for Asheville. This should be very informative for anyone who is interested in recycling. His presentation will focus on new facility, his state of the art sorting machine imported from Germany, and how the facility will affect recycling in WNC. The presentation will be about 30 minutes. The Appalachian Food Storybank was started in 2011 seeking to acknowledge, honor, and archive Appalachian heritage food stories in order to preserve diverse local traditions, natural resources, heirloom varieties and breeds. They provide a service that helps folks record their food stories and histories for years and generations to come. The Storybank is an archive of stories from individuals, families, and communities about southern Appalachian foods – from how they are grown or harvested, to ways of preparing and preserving them, to anecdotes of family or community rituals surrounding food. Come hear more about the Appalachian Food Storybank–learn about the selection process and what’s involved in the interviews. Presenters will share interviews laced with Appalachian wisdom and humor. While sipping a green drink, you can also learn how you can become part of this important legacy by nominating and interviewing someone you know with knowledge to share about Appalachian food heritage. Help us stencil storm drains — then toast our work at Twin Leaf Brewery. Come out and stencil the storm drains of downtown! Storm drains run to the French Broad River and many times people dump litter and/or hazardous waste materials, such as oil or paint, down these grates. Let’s leave a little art to get people aware of how the system is connected. We’ll spend a few hours stenciling and then toast our hard work at the brewery. This two-session class will examine the causes and consequences of climate change, as well as provide direction for meaningful individual and community action. The first session will focus on the economics of climate change, how climate change will affect human welfare, and questions of climate justice and injustice. The second session will look at why more science and more information are not solving the climate problem, examine different forms of climate denialism and inaction, and explore how to develop community initiatives. Sahara Peace Choir will be giving our annual benefit concert at Ten Thousand Villages in Montreat near Black Mountain on Saturday March 21st, 2 PM. This year we will be singing to benefit Helpmate shelter and advocacy for women. Our theme is "A Golden Thread," from the song by Pete Seeger. We will sing my arrangement, "For the Holy Land" incorporating ancient chants of Jewish, Muslim and Christian origin, weaving the sounds together as a prayer for peace. A couple of Russian songs too, this time, as well as my own composition for Oshun, the Orisha of fresh water, and my new one, "Garment of Brightness," based on a Tewa Pueblo prayer. Come and share the spirit with us! A portion of sales at the store will go to Helpmate, and donations will be accepted as well.

Music of the Holocaust with Bandana Klezmer and Dr. Walter Ziffer. Prior to the Holocaust, Klezmer musicians were an integral part of life in the shtetls of Eastern Europe. Sometimes termed "Jewish celebration music" Klezmorum traveled from village to village to play at weddings. As a 14 year old boy in Ceske Tesin Czech Republic, Dr. Ziffer was captured and imprisoned in a series of slave labor munitions camps. Dr. Ziffer will share his story of liberation by the Soviet Army from Gross Rosen and how he came to be reunited with his family. Time is 7 PM and location is Highsmith Student Union Alumni Hall.

A-B Tech Community College and the YWCA of Asheville are partnering to bring a community-wide Stand Against Racism event to the college from 1 to 4:30 PM, Thursday, March 26 in Ferguson Auditorium on the Asheville campus. The event is free and open to the public. Jacquelyn Hallum, Director of Health Careers and Diversity Education at the Mountain Area Health Education Center, will be the keynote speaker. She will be discussing the history of racism in employment and solutions to the problem. The event is a part of the national YWCA Stand Against Racism campaign, which is designed to build community among those who work for racial justice and to raise awareness about the negative impact of institutional and structural racism. Following Hallum’s address, there will be a panel on the history of racism in Asheville and a second panel on how employers in the region are recognizing and addressing organizational racism. A reception will follow in the Ferguson Lobby from 4-4:30. Members of the Racial Justice Coalition will have displays available for public viewing during the entire event. The YWCA Drop-In Child Care Center will provide free childcare at the YW on S. French Broad Avenue from 1 - 5 p.m. for parents attending this event. Short tales from real life will be brought to the microphone by Stories on Asheville’s Front Porch. Part of Women’s History Month celebrated in March, this gathering of raconteurs will feature Jim Stokely, son of Wilma Dykeman, who will recollect his mother’s foresight and strength as a mom, as a woman and as the revered artist who wrote The French Broad and other classics. Along with stories from Jim and master of ceremonies Sarah Larson, the lively gathering will include pieces of 8-10 minutes from Catherine Frank, director of OLLI (Osher Lifelong Learning Institute); Roy Harris, president of the Asheville Storytelling Circle; professional teller Sherry Lovett; and “OLLI Stories For The Third Act Tellers” David Castel, Ann Karson, Karen Schwartz and Shay Thames. This is a family-friendly sustainable living event that features 200 hands-on workshops and demonstrations from experts on real food, organic gardening, homesteading, renewable energy, green building and remodeling, DIY projects, small-scale livestock, green transportation, natural health, and related topics.Also on the grounds: hands-on children’s projects; heritage-breed livestock; an alternative-fuel vehicle display; vendor, livestock and craft demonstrations; and local and organic food offerings. Pre-order weekend wristband passes for $25. Passes will cost $30 at the gate. Children 17 and under get in free. The event offers a limited number of VIP lanyards.
