01/03/16 CURRENT EVENTS BOOK CLUB
Join host Bruce Roth for a lively discussion on topics of current interest including war and peace, the economy, the environment, and other hot political topics. Current Events Book Club discusses “Bravehearts: Whistle-Blowing in the Age of Snowden” by Hertsgaard. Time is 7 PM and location is Malaprops in downtown Asheville. Contact Malaprops for more information. Whistleblowers pay with their lives to save ours. When insiders like former NSA analyst Edward Snowden or ex-FBI agent Coleen Rowley or Big Tobacco truth-teller Jeffrey Wigand blow the whistle on high-level lying, lawbreaking or other wrong doing - whether it's government spying, corporate murder or scientific scandal - the public benefits enormously. Wars are ended, deadly products are taken off the market, white-collar criminals are sent to jail. The whistleblowers themselves, however, generally end up ruined. Nearly all of them lose their jobs, and in many cases their marriages and their health, as they refuse to back down in the face of increasingly ferocious official retaliation. That moral stubbornness despite terrible personal cost is the defining DNA of whistleblowers. The public owes them more than we know. In Bravehearts, Hertsgaard tells the gripping, sometimes darkly comic and ultimately inspiring stories of the unsung heroes of our time. A deeply reported, impassioned polemic, Bravehearts is a book for citizens everywhere - especially students, teachers, activists and anyone who wants to make a difference in the world around them.

Lies about the Russians ‘influencing’ US election
From Craig Muray:
I have watched incredulous as the CIA’s blatant lie has grown and grown as a media story – blatant because the CIA has made no attempt whatsoever to substantiate it. There is no Russian involvement in the leaks of emails showing Clinton’s corruption. Yes this rubbish has been the lead today in the Washington Post in the US and the Guardian here, and was the lead item on the BBC main news. I suspect it is leading the American broadcasts also.
A little simple logic demolishes the CIA’s claims. The CIA claim they “know the individuals” involved. Yet under Obama the USA has been absolutely ruthless in its persecution of whistleblowers, and its pursuit of foreign hackers through extradition. We are supposed to believe that in the most vital instance imaginable, an attempt by a foreign power to destabilize a US election, even though the CIA knows who the individuals are, nobody is going to be arrested or extradited, or (if in Russia) made subject to yet more banking and other restrictions against Russian individuals? Plainly it stinks. The anonymous source claims of “We know who it was, it was the Russians” are beneath contempt.
As Julian Assange has made crystal clear, the leaks did not come from the Russians. As I have explained countless times, they are not hacks, they are insider leaks – there is a major difference between the two. And it should be said again and again, that if Hillary Clinton had not connived with the DNC to fix the primary schedule to disadvantage Bernie, if she had not received advance notice of live debate questions to use against Bernie, if she had not accepted massive donations to the Clinton foundation and family members in return for foreign policy influence, if she had not failed to distance herself from some very weird and troubling people, then none of this would have happened. The continued ability of the mainstream media to claim the leaks lost Clinton the election because of “Russia”, while still never acknowledging the truths the leaks reveal, is Kafkaesque.

Creation Care Alliance of Western North Carolina
Community Statement from Let it Shine collaboration:
We are truly blessed to live in a community that today strives to welcome and support people of every creed, ethnicity, religion, background, gender and orientation. We head into winter understanding that the cycles of nature can teach us so much about the interplay of darkness and light, dormancy and growth. Many of us who follow faith traditions will celebrate winter’s arrival with holiday lights and candles that glow brightly in the long winter nights, reminding us that humans have the power to create light and warmth in the midst of darkness.
There are so many organizations and individuals in Asheville that work every day to reach out across barriers, bringing greater understanding into our community and supporting those who are hurting and who long to be part of a loving community. When we look at all of these efforts together, it is easy to see that there is a strong web of resources and profound hope for our shared future.
There is still much work to be done in this world and in our own neighborhoods, to build equity and to make amends to those who are often unnoticed or disenfranchised by a society that is terrified of scarcity. In times of struggle, the temptation can be strong to retreat into our corners ready to fight. It is too often our tendency to yearn for a scapegoat who we can lay our fears upon, twisting our gift of light into flames of hatred.
The great thing about being human is that we have the ability to choose how we respond, both to external events and internal drives. Today, we are calling upon this entire community to join us in making a choice to shine a light of love in the world; to reject hatred and to seek out ways to quench our own biases with curiosity about those who seem different.
