70th Anniversary

Photograph by POPPERFOTO/GETTY and it appears on The New Yorker website.

Today is the 70th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima. I was taught that this was a good thing when I was a child - because it ended the war. I no longer believe that. I believe they bombed Hiroshima to test out their new weapon and to send a message to Russia and not allow them to get involved in the Pacific theater and grab some lands outside their borders.

It is and was a horror that we visited on the Japanese civilians with this bombing. And it is not over, and will never be over, as long as there are nuclear weapons on the planet. We opened Pandora’s box when we did this, and it is still not closed.
