11/20/17 IMPACTS OF LIVESTOCK OPERATIONS ON WATER QUALITY
Nov. 20: Presentation on the Impacts of Livestock Operations on Water Quality at Sanctuary Brewing Company. Hartwell Carson, French Broad Riverkeeper, and Gray Jernigan, Green Riverkeeper, will present on the impacts to our waterways from raising animals for food, particularly large scale, industrial livestock operations. Every Tuesday, Veterans for Peace Chapter 099 holds a vigil at Vance Monument in downtown Asheville. Time is 4:30 PM. This has been happening since 2002. No matter the weather, no matter if it falls on a holiday, they are out there standing for peace.

Tuesday ASURJ Do-Session, 10 am in Firestorm's back room. We hold this space so that we can check in with each other about our experiences this past week attempting to do good work in Asheville. There are things we have seen that encourage us to believe that white people are waking up to the impact of racism on everyone, and there are things that knock us flat and make us think racism will forever haunt this mountain town. Bring it all, and we will leave with something concrete we can each do this week to support multi-racial coalition work. All are welcome. Do-Session, 11:30-1pm to follow.

11/21/17 ELISHA MITCHELL AUDUBON SOCIETY MEETING
The mission of the Elisha Mitchell chapter of the Audubon Society (EMAS) is to promote an awareness and appreciation of nature, to preserve and protect wildlife and natural ecosystems, and to encourage responsible environmental stewardship. The next EMAS general meetings at the Reuter Center is scheduled at 7 PM on November 21, 2017. Meetings are free and open to everyone. Topic of presentation is “Fire and Birds: Forest disturbances and breeding birds in the southern Appalachians.” Over 85 years of research and hundreds of studies have been conducted at Bent Creek Experimental Forest, a research work unit of the USDA Forest Service, Southern Research Station. Research ecologist Katie Greenberg will present the results of studies addressing how breeding bird communities respond to prescribed fire, fire severity, and both natural and silvicultural disturbances in the Southern Appalachians. Africa Healing Exchange envisions a world where those who experience trauma and chronic stress can heal and thrive in their daily lives, thereby creating healthy communities to promote peace and understanding for all life. AHE provides a platform for people to overcome trauma, manage daily stress and create healthy living habits. The AHE Restoring Resiliency program is delivered to individuals and organizations in the U.S. and Rwanda who are working to help end the cycle of trauma, with particular emphasis on supporting mothers and children in Rwanda. 11/26/17 WNC SOLIDARITY CONCERT SERIES 
The final Sunday of each month in 2017, two groups of WNC-based musicians and their ensembles will each perform a benefit concert to raise funding for WNC nonprofits. The music performed each week will fluctuate between jazz, rhythm & blues, soul, jazz funk, jazz fusion, and swing. Each event will host two groups, playing, consecutively between 3 and 5 PM with a brief intermission. All of proceeds go to the nonprofit organization. The nonprofit for today is Quutopia. Act I is Ruth Cooney Quintet (Joni Mitchell Tribute) and Act II is Alina Quu and Friends. Location is The Block Off Biltmore at Eagle and South Market Streets in downtown Asheville. 2017 WomanUP Celebration and Awards Ceremony. The inspiring stories of “Hidden Figures” retired NASA Engineer Dr. Christine Darden, and entrepreneur Troylyn Ball of Asheville Distilling Co. Retired NASA engineer Dr. Christine Darden and entrepreneur Troylyn Ball of Asheville Distilling Co. share stories of overcoming obstacles to achieve success as professional women at the 2017 WomanUP Celebration and Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, November 28, 2017. A 1958 graduate of Asheville’s Allen High School, guest speaker Dr. Christine Darden started her career as a math teacher and became one of NASA’s “human computers,” going on to have a 40-year career as a NASA engineer and international expert in high-speed aerodynamics and sonic boom research. Dr. Darden will share her story and the career formula that she says pushed her to succeed. Her story is sure to be inspiring for women of all ages and careers. Troylyn Ball is the founder and owner of Asheville Distilling Company and the maker of award-winning Troy & Sons Whiskey. Her story is captivating the nation in her newly released book, Pure Heart: A Spirited Tale of Grace, Grit, and Whiskey. Her tale of perseverance to save her family from financial ruin while caring for her two developmentally challenged, special needs children is a lesson in faith and ingenuity. This “Moonshine Mama” (as she’s called) is as down-home as her whiskey and will capture your heart. Amy West, president of the Native American Student Association, and Heather Hawn, political science professor, will discuss the significance of Columbus Day and the grassroots movement to change this to Indigenous Peoples Day celebrating the history and culture of The First Nations. 12/04/17 DOCUMENTARY SCREENING IN ASHEVILLE
On Monday, December 4, at 6:30 PM, CJJ/West, the Western North Carolina Chapter of the ACLU and Hood Huggers International will be co-sponsoring the screening of “13th” a documentary by filmmaker Ava DuVernay, at the Altamont Theatre at 13 Church Street in Asheville. The film explores the history of racial inequality in the US, focusing on the nation’s prisons that are disproportionately filled with African-Americans. A panel discussion will follow. Catering will be provided by Comedy Catering, and Black Star Line Brewing from Hendersonville, a new African-American owned brewery, will be featuring its brews. “13th” Film Screening. In anticipation Michelle Alexander's visit to UNC Asheville on January 18th, 2018 please join us as we present films and host discussions about the broken criminal justice system in the United States. The first film we will be showing is the critically acclaimed documentary, “13th.” It explores the 13th amendment: did it eradicate, or evolve slavery? On the third Tuesday of each month, Western North Carolina Veterans for Peace meets to coordinate group activities and programs.Veterans For Peace is a global organization of Military Veterans and allies whose collective efforts are to build a culture of peace by using our experiences and lifting our voices. We inform the public of the true causes of war and the enormous costs of wars, with an obligation to heal the wounds of wars. Our network is comprised of over 140 chapters worldwide whose work includes: educating the public, advocating for a dismantling of the war economy, providing services that assist veterans and victims of war, and most significantly, working to end all wars. Buncombe County Commissioners Meeting on December 5, 2017

One issue that is really picking up steam is the Resolution to Achieve 100% Clean Energy by 2030 for Buncombe County. This could even be voted on December 5, so now is the time to act. Carolyn Anderson, of Indivisible Environment and WNC Renewables Coalition, has asked us to call the county commissioners and persuade them to vote "yes" on this resolution. 
-Brownie Newman, Jasmine Beach-Ferrara, and Al Whitesides are already on board, so please thank them for their efforts on this.
