Email to Progressive Dems of Buncombe County

Next meeting of the Progressive Democrats of Buncombe County will be April 8, 2008. This will be held at 7 PM at North Asheville Library.

Our last meeting on February 12th was sparely attended, and the notes from the meeting were posted on my blog.

I did get a response from this blog post – Jim Neal, running for the US Senate, said he is interested in an endorsement from Progressive Democrats of America (PDA). We are a member group of PDA, along with four other groups in NC. I have started the process, but have not gotten the candidate questionnaire back from Jim Neal (or any other candidates) yet.

We have also been asked for an endorsement from Cecil Bothwell, who is running for county commissioner. We do not have an endorsement process in place for local elections, so I think the place to start is to invite all candidates for Buncombe County offices to our meeting on April 8th, and then have a paper ballot vote on endorsements from the members at the meeting. Anyone is welcome to come to our meetings, but membership requires a $5/year dues payment (some scholarships available). We use that money to pay for room rental and other expenses.

Is there anyone who would like to research which Democrats are running for office in Buncombe County and invite them to come (or send a representative) to our April 8th meeting? If so, please get in touch with me. I will invite the candidates for the US Senate seat if we receive back the PDA questionnaire.

The Buncombe County Democratic Party has lots of events in March posted on their website. I recommended registering with the website and then signing up for their emails, to keep up with what is being planned. Here is a link to their website:

The NC Democratic Party precinct meeting is March 11, 2008.

The NC Primary is May 6, 2008.

Sincerely,

Susan Oehler on behalf of Progressive Democrats of Buncombe County (If you would like to be removed from this emailing, please let me know.)

Plans for a New U.S. Nuclear Weapons Complex

Q & A
Q: What is “Complex Transformation”?
A: Complex Transformation is the Bush administration’s plan to overhaul the U.S. Nuclear Weapons Complex. The plan includes a new bomb plant that would enable the mass-production of nuclear weapons for the first time in two decades. Complex Transformation would also consolidate weapon-grade nuclear materials (uranium and plutonium) into fewer locations and reduce the Complex footprint. Detailed information can be found at www.fcnl.org/nuclear

Q: What happened to Complex 2030?
A: Complex Transformation supersedes Complex 2030. In October 2006 the Energy Department introduced Complex 2030, which contained many similar and some major differences to Complex Transformation. The bomb plant proposed as part of Complex 2030 was much larger than the one proposed by Complex Transformation, and was rejected by Congress in 2007. Complex Transformation was released, partially as a response to congressional rejection to Complex 2030, in January 2008. The U.S. Energy Department is a federal agency that maintains the Nuclear Weapons Complex.

Q: What is FCNL’s position on Complex Transformation?
A: Complex Transformation is a comprehensive plan to modernize and consolidate the entire Nuclear Weapons Complex. There are many different components to the plan—some that FCNL support and others that we do not. FCNL supports consolidating weapon-grade nuclear materials into fewer locations and reducing the Complex footprint. FCNL opposes increasing weapon production capacity by building a new bomb plant. February 2008

Q: What is the “new bomb plant” in the Complex Transformation plan?
A: The new nuclear bomb plant proposed in the Complex Transformation plan is officially called the Chemistry and Metallurgy Research Replacement nuclear facility (CMRR). It would have the annual capacity to build 80 plutonium pits, the “triggers” of new nuclear warheads. The proposed bomb plant would enable a sharp increase in U.S nuclear weapons production capacity. In fact, the United States has built only a handful of pits since 1989, when the Rocky Flats Plant outside Boulder, Colorado closed. The CMRR bomb plant would be built at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, located northwest of Santa Fe, New Mexico. The Energy Department estimates that CMRR would cost over $2 billion.

Q: Didn’t we already defeat the “new nuclear bomb plant”?
A: Yes! In fact, arms control advocates have repeatedly stopped the administration from building nuclear bomb plants of varying sizes over the years. The bomb plant that was proposed as part of Complex 2030 was officially called the Consolidated Plutonium Center, and would have been able to produce 125 to 200 nuclear warheads per year. Congress rejected that plant in 2007. The latest bomb plant, proposed as part of Complex Transformation, is officially called the Chemistry and Metallurgy Research Replacement nuclear facility (CMRR), and would be able to produce 80 warheads per year.

Q: How can you oppose the CMRR bomb plant?
A: Express your views on new nuclear weapons directly to the federal government. The Energy Department (DOE) is required to consider your recommendations on Complex Transformation and the proposed CMRR bomb plant through public hearings and comments. Thirteen public hearings will be held across the country in Complex Transformation-effected states starting February 21 and ending March 25. For times and locations of the hearings visit FCNL website.

Public comments will be accepted by the DOE through April 10, 2008. Submit comments by email to: ComplexTransformation@nnsa.doe.gov

Clip from article in the Rolling Stones titled THE CHICKEN DOVES:

The really tragic thing about the Democratic surrender on Iraq is that it's now all but guaranteed that the war will be off the table during the presidential campaign. Once again — it happened in 2002, 2004 and 2006 — the Democrats have essentially decided to rely on the voters to give them credit for being anti-war, despite the fact that, for all the noise they've made to the contrary, in the end they've done nothing but vote for war and cough up every dime they've been asked to give, every step of the way. [One error I noted in this article – Senator Chafee, Republican, did vote against the war on Iraq in 2002. I am not sure about his voting record on funding the war. Also, be advised this article has some bad language in it. – Susan]

Bush Policies Escalate Crisis in Israel and Palestine with 25% Increase in Military Aid to Israel

The Bush administration’s policy of endless war has driven up the U.S. military budget to the highest in history. The military spending has increased by 70% in the last seven years, above and beyond the billions spent on the war and occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan. The Bush doctrine puts military action before, and as a substitute for, real diplomacy. The proposed increase in military aid to Israel is the first installment of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed by the United States and Israel in August 2007 to increase military aid to Israel by 25%, totaling $30 billion over the next decade.

War, occupation and military build up is not the way out of the terrible political and humanitarian crisis in in the Middle East. The U.S. military aid supports Israel’s human rights abuses and illegal military occupation in violation of U.S. laws. The only solution is for the U.S. to press Israel to end the occupation of the West Bank and Gaza, just as the U.S. must end it’s illegal occupation of Iraq! United For Peace & Justice is joining with the U.S. Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation, Jewish Voice for Peace, Peace Action, American Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (all member groups of UFPJ) and the Council for the National Interest to call upon the House and Senate Appropriations Subcommittees to end military aid to Israel as the first step towards Middle East peace.

Send a Personal Letter to Members of Congress on the Appropriations Sub-Committee to question the increase in military aid to Israel. Help make sure that the Members of Congress who work most closely with foreign aid issues know that thousands of people in the United States oppose military aid to Israel. To send your own personal letter to the Members of Congress who serve on these Appropriations Subcommittees, go to this website.
