ACTIONS AND READINGS
*******************************************
Greetings from 2013 Walk For Our Grandchildren: HOLDING OBAMA'S FEET TO THE FIRE:
In two recent speeches President Obama has begun talking
about controlling the use of fossil fuels, about making the right decision on
Keystone XL Pipeline, and about protecting future generations from the ravages
of climate change.
This is very good news and shows that he is aware of the
protests occurring around the country about Keystone and other fossil fuels.
But while a step in the right direction, these words have not yet been translated into the actions and policies which are needed immediately and on a very large scale. NOW is the time to hold Obama's feet to the fire of climate change and to bring pressure on him to translate words into action and policy.
But while a step in the right direction, these words have not yet been translated into the actions and policies which are needed immediately and on a very large scale. NOW is the time to hold Obama's feet to the fire of climate change and to bring pressure on him to translate words into action and policy.
This is the opportunity that the 2013 Walk for our
Grandchildren provides. This Walk and the events surrounding it have grown out
of a coalition of groups, including the 2013 Walk organization in Asheville, 350.org's national organization, the
Summer Heat campaign, Chesapeake Climate Action Network, Energy Action
Coalition, DC Action Lab, and iMatter, as well as some churches and other
groups.
Please consider joining the Walk for some or all of the 100 mile journey through Maryland and into DC which starts July 19 at Camp David and ends at the White House on July 27.

UPDATE: SCHEDULE OF EVENTS FOR 2013 WALK
ON THE TRAIL: On Friday July 19 a group of about 20
hikers will leave Camp David and walk to Harpers
Ferry, arriving Sunday July 21. On Sunday July 21 registration and
orientation for through-walkers will take place in Harpers
Ferry campground starting early afternoon. From Monday July 22
until Friday July 26, we will walk on the Chesapeake & Ohio canal trail
from Harpers Ferry into the District
of Columbia. On Friday night we will stay the St
Stephens Church on 16th Street
in DC. We will walk about 12 miles per day, and evenings will camp along the
canal in designated camping areas. Food for through hikers will be provided by
Seeds for Peace, and there will be evening programs organized by the Walk and
by some community and church groups along the way. We may also use the evenings
for banner drops and highway blogging. For those who are not familiar with the
canal trail it is one of the most beautiful hiking trails in the U.S., and the
walk alone will be an experience to remember.
RALLY FOR INDEPENDENCE FROM FOSSIL FUELS: On Saturday, July
27 walkers will leave St Stephens Church at 9:30 am, walk through Malcom X Park
on 16th Street (which has a statue of Joan of Arc on horseback with a sword
pointed toward the White House), and then proceed the 2 miles through DuPont
Circle to Lafayette Park across form the White house. The Rally for Independence from Fossil Fuels will begin at
11:30 am in Lafayette
Park. The theme of the
rally will be our collective responsibility to each other, our children and the
earth's future - and our demand for President Obama to keep his promises on
climate change and to protect the future generations of children by rejecting
Keystone XL. The rally will feature youth from iMatter and elsewhere,
who will tell stories of the impact of climate change on their communities, and
they will discuss their federal lawsuit. Bill McKibben will be one of the
speakers.
DONATIONS: WE NEED MONEY: Please consider making a donation to the Walk. We especially need money to support young people who will be walking with us and participating in the rally. We may also bring native persons from Alaska or Alberta.
Please also consider doing fundraising for the Walk among your friends, churches, organizations, and acquaintances who are concerned about these issues, especially those who have grandchildren and who like us in the face of Climate Change may wonder what they can do to keep the planet safe for future generations. One friend of ours in Madison wrote letters to 175 of her friends asking for money for the Walk.
A donation of $250 supports one through-walker for entire route. You can donate through PayPal on our website or send check to CLIMATE GROUND ZERO, c/o Richard Fireman, 374 Laughing River Rd, Mars Hill, NC 28754
