STATEMENT FROM UNITED NATIONAL ANTI-WAR COALITION

With tough talk and crocodile tears for those killed in the chemical attack, President Obama made a tactical retreat from his insistence on an immediate attack on Syria. Though he left the attack option on that table, this retreat should be seen as a victory for those who oppose a new U.S. war on Syria. The Tuesday, Sept. 10 speech took place in the context of the near total isolation of the warmaking Obama administration at home and around the world. The British parliament voted down Prime Minister David Cameron's proposal to back the U.S. president. German Chancellor Angela Merkel opposed it as did virtually all traditional U.S. allies. No support was forthcoming from forces ranging from the Arab League to Pope Benedict XVI.

Every national poll on Syria demonstrates overwhelming majority opposition to yet another U.S. war. Overnight, a new antiwar movement is emerging in the U.S. and around the world. Aware of this mass antiwar sentiment, the U.S. Congress was poised to vote against Obama's proposal, an action that would make the president the first in the modern era to be essentially reprimanded by the U.S. legislature. With no immediate options before him, Obama was compelled to at least momentarily jump at Russia's proposal that Syria put its chemical weapons into international safe keeping. The Syrian government, while accepting this proposal, nevertheless continued to insist that it did not use the chemical weapons and had no intention of doing so. To date no U.S. government agency or the United Nations team on the site has refuted this position.  Indeed, Secretary of State John Kerry insisted that it was too late for the facts - too late for any UN report.

With nothing but circumstantial evidence that the chemical sarin gas attack was used by the Syrian government, Obama's speech assumed this as fact and the basis for attacking Syria. The U.S. record is replete with similar false allegations to justify war, from the Vietnam era Tonkin Bay "incident" that proved to be fabricated by U.S. spy agencies, to Saddam Hussein's "weapons of mass destruction" that were "proved" to exist by the Bush administration. History demonstrates that U.S. pretexts for war are invented with impunity and with monstrous results. Four million Vietnamese died in that 10-year war
along with 57,000 U.S. soldiers, many still suffering from the poison chemicals employed by the U.S.  1.5 million Iraqis died decades later; no"weapons of mass destruction" were ever found. The U.S.-backed Saddam Hussein regime, with the approval of the U.S., employed sarin gas against the Iranian people in that eight-year war that took the lives of more than one million Iranians and Iraqis.

The international chemical weapons convention prohibits the production, storage, and use of chemical weapons.  If Obama was truly concerned about chemical weapons in the region, why is he not calling for the destruction of all chemical weapons - those owned and used by allies as well as foes?  This would then apply equally to the Syrian government, rebel forces, Israel, and the Egyptian military - none of which have signed the convention - and of course, the U.S., which does not adhere to international conventions and has used chemical weapons with impunity.

The U.S. government has no political, legal or moral standing to use force against any nation. The warmaking would-be cop of the world has an unbroken record of imperial interventions that have murdered millions to advance the interests of the elite few, not those of the vast majority. The incredible revelations of Edward Snowden and Chelsea Manning should suffice to caution everyone that the U.S. "national security state" will use any and all measures to advance its interests and that these "interests" have nothing in common with those of the American people. Yet the Obama administration has not abandoned its imperial objective in Syria - to put into place yet another government subservient to the corporate objectives of the U.S. one percent.

The most remarkable and revealing statement in Obama's speech was his assertion that "for nearly seven decades, the United States has been the anchor of global security. This has meant doing more than forging international agreements -- it has meant enforcing them. The burdens of leadership are often heavy, but the world is a better place because we have borne them."  He goes on to say: "Our ideals and principles, as well as our national security, are at stake in Syria, along with our leadership of a world where we seek to ensure that the worst weapons will never be used…That's what makes America different. That's what makes us exceptional. With humility, but with resolve, let us never lose sight of that essential truth."

This incredibly arrogant and dangerous statement of a self-appointed American ‘exceptionalism’ means that the U.S. has the right and the "burden" of acting militarily in American interests because the U.S. alone (and possibly some of our chosen allies) has ideals and principles, always of the highest order, and for the betterment of humanity.

What hypocrisy and what bald-faced lies.  The 70-year record of the United States of bringing death, destruction, and domination to the world is not something Americans can be proud of.  Many Americans are recognizing this 'essential truth' and recognizing that only we, the people, have the power and obligation to end the horror perpetrated on our planet. The U.S. antiwar movement must seize this likely temporary moment in history to deepen its opposition to war against the people of Syria. We have won some precious time to organize a massive movement to compel the government to bring the troops, warships, and planes home now.  We must continue to demand:

No U.S. War on Syria! U.S. Hands off Syria! No New U.S. Wars! Bring the Troops and War Dollars Home Now! Money for Jobs, Education and Health Care Not War!

Hey Friends,

We are announcing the fundraiser of the Asheville Tool Library! We've come a long way and now we're even closer to having this incredible resource here in our backyard.

First, In order for us to serve our community and get this project up and running we're gonna need to raise some money.  In fact we're gonna need to raise what could be considered "a lot" of money but not that it can't be done!  We asked tool libraries all over the country how much it really costs to get a project like this off the ground and the answer was about $20,000. This goal is totally achievable and we're going to reach it in a variety of ways including hosting fundraisers, applying for grants, approaching sponsors and reaching out to all of you. This week we are proud to be launching our first fundraising campaign with a goal of $10,000 and this is only going to be possible with your help (have you seen our video?).

To jump start this campaign we're excited to announce that the Tool Library was selected, along with 9 other finalists, in the National Get2Gether Neighborhood Challenge.  The first $1,000 that we raise will be matched dollar for dollar by the Center for the New American Dream and IOBY (a fairly new crowd-funding platform). Second, Two words: "Tool Talk." So join us - we'll have food and booze! Wednesday, October 2nd 6-8pm (right after the Farmers Market) at the French Broad Coop at 90 Biltmore Avenue in Asheville.

Third, We're a real non-profit now!  We recently became a fiscally sponsored project of Empowerment Works and can now directly receive tax-deductible donations!  Please check out all the amazing projects they support both in the states and internationally.

Fourth, We're linking up with the French Broad Food Co-Op and in our beginning stages the library will officially operate out of two shipping containers next to Build It Naturally in the same parking lot as the Wednesday Farmer's Market (during which we'll be open!).  Oh, and we may have a knife-sharpening station - just sayin'.

Fifth, With the rains finally gone, the Big Love Fest is set to kick off their annual celebration! We've been chosen as the festival's non-profit to sell water and table in front of the FBFC - 1/2 the profits will go directly to the tool library. Sunday September 15th, all day. We'd love to see y'all there!

And finally, We're proud to announce that we've been chosen by Toy Boat Community Art Space as a partner in an exciting upcoming event, the annual High Noon Circus on September 13th @ 7pm.  Part of the ticket sales will go towards the tool library, so please come out to support us and see and amazing show!

Support Obama - NO MATTER WHAT!!

Up where we belong......

I remember hearing this song just about every morning on the radio in the early 1980s.  I was working full time, taking undergraduate classes to get ready for graduate school, and then later, going to graduate school.  Those actions lead to the career that I have had for most of my life:  pediatric audiology.  It was a long road, and many obstacles, but I got there. I have been involved with either graduate school in audiology or doing audiology for 30 years this month! 

I guess most people would have a romantic interpretation of this song - but not true for me. It was about having a future and making a contribution to the world at large.

Hearing

Thirty years ago this month, I started studying audiology. I have been working and studying in this field ever since. I am so grateful that I picked this path, that I had the opportunity to follow it, that I can feel that I made a positive contribution during my working hours, and that it has given me an abundant life! It was a lot of work, but very much worth it. And here is a video on HOW OLD ARE YOUR EARS? - sorry about the ad!

09/25/13 WATER SUSTAINABILITY INITIATIVE MEETING

This will be held at Earthfare at Westgate in the back room. Time is 5 PM to 6:30 PM. Water is the basis for many aspects of resilience: food, health, a clean environment, and world peace for starters.  The Water Sustainability Initiative of Western North Carolina (WSI) was initiated to increase awareness of water sustainability and the methods for achieving it and to identify WNC as a place that knows how to maintain clean affordable water for all. This initiative came from Transition Asheville. We will be deciding on our approach for gaining support from other organizations and will spend a few minutes updating the progress on identifying a neighborhood to  demonstrate the effectiveness of plants, earthworks, and tanks for minimizing both flooding and drought.  If working toward water sustainability rings true for you, we hope to see you there!

We are announcing the fundraiser of the Asheville Tool Library!

We've come a long way and now we're even closer to having this incredible resource here in our backyard.

First,

In order for us to serve our community and get this project up and running we're gonna need to raise some money.  In fact we're gonna need to raise what could be considered "a lot" of money but not that it can't be done!  We asked tool libraries all over the country how much it really costs to get a project like this off the ground and the answer was about $20,000. This goal is totally achievable and we're going to reach it in a variety of ways including hosting fundraisers, applying for grants, approaching sponsors and reaching out to all of you. This week we are proud to be launching our first fundraising campaign with a goal of $10,000 and this is only going to be possible with your help. To jump start this campaign we're excited to announce that the Tool Library was selected, along with 9 other finalists, in the National Get2Gether Neighborhood Challenge.  The first $1,000 that we raise will be matched dollar for dollar by the Center for the New American Dream and IOBY (a fairly new crowd-funding platform). Two words: "Tool Talk." We're linking up with the French Broad Food Co-Op and in our beginning stages the library will officially operate out of two shipping containers next to Build It Naturally in the same parking lot as the Wednesday Farmer's Market (during which we'll be open!).  Oh, and we may have a knife-sharpening station - just sayin'.

Joint Statement on the Syrian Crisis

"Forceful Diplomacy, Not Military Force"

Tonight, President Obama addressed the nation on Syria, indicating that he will work with the international community - Britain, China, France and Russia, among others - to place a resolution before the UN requiring Syria to surrender its chemical weapons and destroy them, under UN supervision. The President's remarks reflect the extraordinary events unfolding in the last two days that demonstrate that forceful diplomacy - not military force - should guide international efforts to resolve the crisis in Syria. Russia proposed a diplomatic solution to address Syria's chemical weapons, and Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem responded, "We fully support Russia's initiative concerning chemical weapons in Syria, and we are ready to cooperate. As a part of the plan, we intend to join the Chemical Weapons Convention." This could mean an important strengthening of that vital treaty.

Tonight, the President indicated that he was encouraged by the Russian proposal, and that it has "potential" to remove the threat of chemical weapons in Syria without U.S. military action. He asked that Congress postpone any votes to authorize U.S. military strikes in Syria, in order to pursue this diplomatic path. Still, the President unfortunately reserved the right to launch a military strike if the diplomatic effort does not succeed, and we urge Congress to oppose any such military authorization. We cannot forget 2002, when then-President Bush persuaded Congress to vote for an authorization for war he claimed was only to strengthen his diplomatic hand. As we know, that authorization was instead used to justify an illegal war and occupation of Iraq, a war whose consequences continue to be felt across the region and here at home. A potential alternative to a U.S. military strike - a strike opposed overwhelmingly by the American people and the U.S. Congress - is now on the table.

Russian, Syrian and Iranian diplomats are talking. Options that didn't exist yesterday are suddenly on the table. The U.S. and our allies, with the United Nations in the forefront, seem ready to join those new initiatives to generate a binding, verifiable and enforceable UN resolution to rid Syria of its chemical weapons in a way that does not threaten wider war. Today we have the possibility to turn the threat of war around. The Obama administration's new approach is a clear recognition of a war-weary and
war-opposing American people. The potential costs of this new war – human and financial - are too great in this moment of economic crisis for so many of America's poor. New possibilities for diplomacy - real alternatives to war - are rising. Those possibilities must be pursued urgently, seriously, and immediately.

The diplomacy must bring together all sides in Syria's war, and all those arming and funding them. Russia and the U.S., along with Iran, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and beyond, must all be at the table with all their Syrian partners - and we must push, urge, demand an immediate ceasefire and an immediate arms
embargo on all sides. We stand against any possession, manufacture, or use of chemical weapons -
and the Convention Against Chemical Weapons must be strengthened, not ignored. We don't know for sure who used them in Syria - an international inspection team, representing the United Nations and the signatories of the Chemical Weapons Convention, should be sent urgently to determine that. The
UN presence would also be an important step towards implementing a ceasefire.

This is a moment we can push for an end to all chemical weapons in Syria - and then we can broaden that effort to push just as hard for something the U.S. called for more than 20 years ago - a "zone in the Middle East free of all weapons of mass destruction." That means chemical, nuclear, biological and all these weapons of horror. No exceptions. Throughout the Middle East.

There is renewed hope that the global community can make that turn now, today. Congress should follow the huge majorities of the American people who want to say no to any threat of war. Congress can join the Administration as both turn away from the threat of missile strikes, of escalating violence in
the region, even, perhaps, the threat of a new war. We can make that turn. The Pope reminds us "war brings on war. Violence brings on violence." Global leaders must have the "courage [to] take up the way of negotiations." The Pope's call has been joined by Nobel laureates, by Syrians desperate for an
end to war, by diplomats and generals, by peace and justice advocates and politicians. We have a chance today. We must seize that chance. The Russian proposal and these new diplomatic initiatives turn night into mid-day, and we should leave no stone unturned to seize the light.

Letter to the Washington Post

Sent earlier this month:

Dear Mr. Feaver:

The IAEA does not state that Iran has a nuclear weapon, nor do they state that Iran is building one.  Your paper has portrayed Iran as making an effort to get nuclear weapons, and there are no facts to support this claim.

I believe telling fabrications like this is very dangerous, and could lead to war. I also believe that war is a failure of human compassion and human intelligence. I had thought that your paper had learned something from not reporting on the lies about Iraq’s WMDs, but I guess I was wrong about that.

Iran’s nuclear weapons program is just like Iraq’s WMD program. It does not exist. It is a lie, then and now. I was smart enough to figure out back in the fall of 2002 that Iraq did not have WMDs, so I think you really should question why all the journalists at the Washington Post in 2002 was not nearly as smart as an audiologist in North Carolina.

In my eyes, your paper’s failure to report the truth on Iraq resulted in a lot of innocent blood being spilled, and it spilled onto your hands. I do not want to see the Washington Post repeat that mistake and thereby spill more innocent blood.

The Duke Roundtable is a gathering of activists and organizations concerned about the power and influence of Duke Energy and the effects that is having on our local communities and citizens. Duke Power is the largest utility in the U.S. since it merged with Progress Energy. Duke wants the NC legislature to pass laws favorable to Duke's ability to raise electric consumers' rates without oversight or public discussion. Duke also wants to continue to invest in dangerous and dirty nuclear and coal plants endangering the health and safety of our communities while safe and cleaner alternatives exist. Members of the Roundtable see challenging Duke's power in N.C. as a social justice, an economic justice and environmental justice issue. 09/21/13 ASHEVILLE NO LABELS MEETING

This is the initial meeting for the start up of an Asheville Chapter of “No Labels”, a non-partisan all-inclusive group of problems solvers dedicated to establishing accountability in government for actually solving the complex issues that face our nation. No Labels is an all-inclusive citizen’s movement consisting of persons from all political persuasions.  The primary purpose of this movement is to promote a pragmatic, problem solving approach to addressing the complex issues facing our nation.  No Label’s is nationally pursuing this goal in three simple ways:  1) by organizing citizen problem solvers across America  2) by providing space for legislators who want to solve problems to convene and 3)  pushing for common-sense reforms to make our government work. 09/21/13 OBAMA, LISTEN TO YOUR SCIENTISTS!!

We’re drawing a line in Asheville by gathering at the National Climatic Data Center to demand that Obama listen to his scientists. The scientist’s message is clear: further loading the atmosphere with carbon dioxide from massive new fossil fuel projects like the Alberta tar sands will wreck the world's climate and spell disaster for America. Our demand: draw a line through plans for the Keystone XL – permanently. Meet at the post office on Coxe Avenue (don’t part there) at 5:30 PM and then we will walk to the Federal Building on Patton to show our support for the scientists at NCDC. This is not to protest the NCDC, but to send a message to the White House.

09/21/13 STREAM CLEAN UP BY WNC ALLIANCE

The Western North Carolina Alliance is co-hosting Blue Ridge Big Sweep, an annual, multi-county stream cleanup starting at 10 AM. The Blue Ridge Big Sweep is an international litter cleanup program that brings citizens and community organizations together to clear trash from their waterways. Other organizations co-hosting the event include Asheville GreenWorks, the Environmental and Conservation Organization of Western North Carolina (ECO) and RiverLink. WNCA and its volunteers will meet at Zen Tubing (1648 Brevard Road) at 10 AM to determine tasks. Volunteers will be rewarded with food and Sierra Nevada beer (for those 21 and over) for their hard work. 09/21/13 SING OUT FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

There are over 175 actions planned across the United States to Draw the Line on the tar sands and Keystone XL -- from a high water mark being chalked in Manhattan, to a "People's Eminent Domain" in Houston, to a line drawn in the sand outside President Obama's Hawaii vacation home. This nation-wide push couldn't be coming at a more important time -- after President Obama laid down some big promises, Canada is making their final desperate plays to push the pipeline through, and resistance to other tar sands projects across the US is picking up. People power is the beating heart of this campaign, and this is our time to show it. There will be a Sing Out for Our Environment in front of the Courthouse on Main & Broad in Brevard NC. Time is 11 AM.

The Earth Sabbath Celebrations are contemplative and experiential services which utilize community building exercises, readings from many faith traditions, music, video, ritual, movement, chant, guided meditation and other modalities to reach deep into the grief and love we feel for our Earth and help both salve and energize our spirits so we can continue the work of restoration and repair of and with the Creator and creation. The Success Equation, Trinity Episcopal Church and the Cathedral of All Souls invites communities of faith for an evening to explore the impact that child/family poverty has in our community and how we can respond through service and advocacy. Participants will hear from speakers and have a chance to discuss opportunities to get involved in the following areas: Early Childhood Development, Family Supports, Family Economic Stability. 09/25/13 WATER SUSTAINABILITY INITIATIVE MEETING

This will be held at Earthfare at Westgate in the back room. Time is 5 PM to 6:30 PM.

Water is the basis for many aspects of resilience: food, health, a clean environment, and world peace for starters.  The Water Sustainability Initiative of Western North Carolina (WSI) was initiated to increase awareness of water sustainability and the methods for achieving it and to identify WNC as a place that knows how to maintain clean affordable water for all. This initiative came from Transition Asheville. We will be deciding on our approach for gaining support from other organizations and will spend a few minutes updating the progress on identifying a neighborhood to  demonstrate the effectiveness of plants, earthworks, and tanks for minimizing both flooding and drought.  If working toward water sustainability rings true for you, we hope to see you there!

September 21, 2013, Asheville's Dog Tag Art (dogtagart.com) is asking folks to Tweet #PeaceDay on Twitter to raise awareness of 31st anniversary of Peace Day.

September 21, 2013, is the 31st anniversary of The U.N.'s Peace Day. The 193 member nations of the U.N. have dedicated 9/21 of each year to world peace, and specifically the absence of war and violence. However, the U.N. has yet to actualize a temporary global ceasefire in honor of their declaration of an International Day of Peace.

Asheville, North Carolina will be the hub of an online effort to make #PeaceDay a trending topic on Twitter on September 21, 2013, the 31st anniversary of The United Nation's International Day of Peace, now called Peace Day. Dog Tag Art is sponsoring a Peace Day pro-peace rally to begin at 11:30 AM Eastern both online and in-person. Online via PeaceOn.Us, and in-person event stations will include Asheville Art Museum, Black Mountain College Museum, and Firestorm Cafe.

Upcoming International Day of Peace

Boycott and Divest Statement and Actions

Lake Erie Yearly Meeting, a regional Quaker organization encompassing Ohio, Michigan, and Western Pennsylvania, has become the first Quaker Yearly Meeting to officially endorse boycott and divestment targeting companies complicit in the Israeli occupation. The recently adopted minute states:

“Lake Erie Yearly Meeting calls for Friends to join the boycott of products made in Israel's illegal West Bank settlements and to divest from companies that support Israel's military occupation and repression of the Palestinian people.”

Congratulations to member organization Palestine-Israel Action Group of Ann Arbor Friends Meeting and the many others who helped achieve this breakthrough, the latest in a string of Quaker decisions and actions in support of Palestinian rights, including:

*Last year, the Friends Fiduciary Corporation, which manages more than 300 Quaker institutions, divested more than $1.2 million in holdings of Caterpillar, Hewlett Packard and Veolia following advocacy by Ann Arbor Friends working for Palestinian rights.

*The American Friends Service Committee implemented a screen banning investment in 29 companies that benefit from the Israeli occupation. Earlier this year, the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) U.S. unanimously adopted the same screen!

*Illinois Yearly Meeting, Blue River Quarterly Meeting, St. Louis Monthly Meeting and Colorado Springs Monthly Meeting all came out in support of the We Divest Campaign urging financial giant TIAA-CREF to divest from the Israeli occupation.

Now, the U.S. Quakers are setting their sights on Israel's illegal settlement products.

Inspired by the breakthrough, and with support from the US Campaign, Quakers nationwide are forming a new national group, Quaker Palestine Israel Network (QPIN) to further Friends' support for Palestinian freedom through boycott and divestment campaigns.
