ACTIONS AND READINGS
*******************************************
From Paul Magnarella:
I recently wrote a short piece entitled “A non-military
approach to the Syrian crisis.” Peace Voice has been distributing it to news
sources around the country. One of them to publish it is the Muncie
(Indiana)
Free Press. If anyone on your list is interested, it can be read at: http://www.munciefreepress.com/node/29536

An appeal from a local activist:
Some of you may have heard, and others maybe not…we suffered severe flood damage to our home in Asheville, NC. The oldest part of the home is 98 years. On July 4th severe rains landed on our already drenched soil and water came up from the ground and flooded our basement. The basement was dirt floored and housed our furnace, solar batteries and the foundation. The furnace and the batteries will need to be replaced. The foundation under the fireplace/chimney was washed away. This caused the fireplace to drop pulling down on the floor and cracking the surfaces of the inside walls. The part of the chimney that was in the basement collapsed, but fortunately before the house was pulled down by the dropping fireplace/chimney, Ken Wells Foundation was able to take out the menacing fireplace and chimney, brick by brick starting at the top. The floor now has additional support and we have begun to do repairs to the inside and get quotes for a new heating system.

We started a fundraiser at a site called Give Forward: https://www.giveforward.com/fundraiser/53p2/save-our-98-year-old-house
We had distributed information about this through social
media and we have had many generous donations for which we are very grateful.
The fundraiser is ending on the 11th, so I decided to send out the information
through emails as well, since I know that there are some of you who don't use
social media much or at all, and I have not been as connected through personal
networks since I went back to graduate school (I received my DMA in Music
Composition this past May, btw, yippee!).
We don’t have flood insurance (which is not unusual here in
the mountains) and just the foundation work alone is difficult to handle
financially, let alone the rebuilding, repair, and replacement of the heating
system. We have also used the fund raising site to share our wishlist for those
who might be able to share materials with us and are so grateful for the 2x4s
and other materials which have been donated. Lastly, we use the fund raising
site to try to keep updates going so people can stay in touch with how things
are progressing in our efforts to save this beloved home.
We have been greatly blessed by the generosity and good will
of those around us. Thanks to all of you who have assisted us in any way.
At times when we have felt discouraged, we received encouraging words, smiles,
prayers, well-wishes.
In Peace,
Cicada

International Day of Peace Celebration
September 21st, 2013 at 11:00am
In celebration of the 31st Anniversary of
the UN's Internation Day of Peace, community members are focusing on three
primary faces of peace: inner-peace, peace between humans, and peace with
nature.
At 11:30am individuals will gather online
or at one of four physical locations: Asheville
Art Museum, Black
Mountain College
Museum, Firestorm Cafe and Warren Wilson
College. Each location
will focus on a different aspect of peace through presentation, workshop or
performance.
At Firestorm Cafe & Books participants
will focus on inner peace, through the creation of art. Art supplies and
activities for kids and adults will be provided. Local artist Valerie Sanchez
will discuss the role of creation in her practice of inner peace and the role
of public art in bringing people together.

Sign the Peace Voter Pledge: Send a message to Congress that
they will hear and understand.
“I pledge that I will not vote to reelect any member of
Congress who votes for the Authorization for the Use of Military Force against Syria.”
Join in making clear that we expect our representatives and
senators to represent us. The job of Congress is not to serve (or undermine)
the President. Their job is to represent the American people.
If we, the people, support a diplomatic, not a military,
response to the Syrian crisis, we have to do our jobs and pledge our votes to
peacemaking, not endless war.
Sign the Peace Voter Pledge right now. Then use the hashtag
#PledgePeace to spread the word.
Thank you.
