This June 20th marks the 16th annual World Refugee Day, which raises awareness for refugees and the issues they face as they try to find safety, happiness, and success in new lands. According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), as of 2015, there are 65.3 million displaced peoples around the world with 21.3 million of them classified as refugees. That’s about the same size as the state of Florida! This is the highest number of refugees on record according to the UNCHR.  

At CRP, we work to not only assist refugees with basic needs, but to enrich their lives in Amman as well. As we wrote in a recent blog post about our Women’s Empowerment Workshop, “Knowing one’s rights is an essential element of being or becoming empowered.” Read more about it here!

Now it is up to us to spread our awareness to others who might not realize the gravity of the situation. This coming World Refugee Day we encourage everyone to take the time to talk about issues refugees face.

UNCHR Stats on the Refugee Crisis (as of 2015):

• 33,972 people become refugees everyday

• Syria, Afghanistan, and Somalia produce the most refugees. Syria has 4.9 million refugees, Afghanistan has 2.7 million refugees, and Somalia has 1.1 million refugees

• The top five host countries as of 2015 were Turkey (2.5 million), Pakistan (1.6 million), Lebanon (1.1 million), Islamic Republic of Iran (979,400), Ethiopia (736,100), and Jordan (664,100)

• These statistics continue to grow annually
