11/10/14 A CONVERSATION ON THE MIDDLE EAST
A conversation with PCUSA Moderator Heath Rada and his wife Peggy  on their October 2014 trip to the Middle East. Time is 3 to 4 PM and location is the 3rd floor of Freeland Hall at 318 Georgia Terrance in Montreat. A reception will follow at the Presbyterian Heritage Center Library where the PHC exhibit on Missions to the Middle East is on display until November 14. Cosponsored by the Presbyterian Heritage Center and the Presbytery of WNC.

11/10/14 NOVEMBER SOCIAL WITH TRANSITION ASHEVILLE
The Transition Asheville November social will feature a presentation by Maggie Ullman, former Chief Sustainability Officer for the City of Asheville. She will share some lessons from the June conference in Denmark of resilient cities, which she attended along with representatives of 35 cities from around the world. The focus of the conference was on moderating and adapting to the effects of climate change. Her powerpoint presentation addresses how climate mitigation and adaptation meet. Many of us focus our efforts on preventing climate change, but our communities are already experiencing impacts of a changing climate, so now we need to understand where strategies for prevention and adaptation meet. Location is St. Mary’s Church on Charlotte Street in Asheville and time is 6:30 PM.

11/10/14 DOCUMENTARY AT UNCA
“The Anonymous People” is a feature documentary film about the more than 23 million Americans living in long-term recovery from addiction to alcohol and other drugs. Deeply entrenched social stigma have kept recovery voices silent and faces hidden for decades.The moving story of The Anonymous People is told through the faces and voices of citizens, leaders, volunteers, corporate executives, public figures, and celebrities who are laying it all on the line to save the lives of others just like them. This passionate new public recovery movement aims to transform public opinion, engage communities and elected officials, and finally shift problematic policy toward lasting solutions. 11/11/14 HOLOCAUST PROGRAM
Julie Kohner will present the Holocaust program “Voices of the Generations”. Kohner is the daughter of Holocaust survivor Hanna Kohner and her husband Walter. She carries on her parent’s work to preserve the memory of the Holocaust. She will answer questions for 30 minutes following the program. Admission is free and open to the public. Time is 7 PM and location is Congregation Beth Israel on Murdock Avenue in Asheville.
11/11/14 WORLD AFFAIRS COUNCIL TALK AT UNCA
The World Affairs Council of WNC will offer an address called “War Crimes Trials” at the Reuter Center, Room 102-A. Focus is on Charles Taylor, which the speaker helped prosecute. Time is 7:30 PM.

11/12/14 WESTERN CAROLINIANS FOR PEACE AND JUSTICE IN THE MIDDLE EAST
A meeting will be held at 9:30 AM Wednesday at Black Mountain Presbyterian Church.

11/12/14 GREEN DRINKS
Bill Jones, President of Carolina Native Nursery, will discuss many of the native shrubs they currently have in production. He will provide informational handouts regarding choosing the right native plants for your particular location including sun verses shade, wet and dry locations, orientation, and more. For over a decade Carolina Native has served the landscaping and construction industry in WNC by growing and delivering beautiful native plants. Program starts at 6 PM. Location is Green Sage in downtown Asheville on Broadway Avenue.

11/13/14 PANEL PRESENTATION AT MARS HILL UNIVERSITY
Panel Presentation: Personal Recollections of the Rosenwald School. This is part of the exhibition “Our Story–This Place, The History of African American Education in Madison County, North Carolina: The Mars Hill Anderson Rosenwald School” at the Rural Heritage Museum at Mars Hill University that runs until February 2015.This exhibition traces the history of African American education in Western North Carolina, with a particular emphasis on Madison County, from Reconstruction through the period of Civil Rights legislation and the integration in the 1960s. The Mars Hill Anderson Rosenwald School played a large role in African American heritage and history in Madison County and Western North Carolina for a good part of the 20th century. Moderated by Kevin Barnette (Assist. football coach at MHU) to include Anderson Rosenwald school alumni Oralene Simmons, Charity Ray, Dorothy Coone, Omar   Lewis McClain, Fatimah Rashida Shabazz, Gene Jones.Time TBA. 11/13/14 PUBLIC HEARING ON FOREST SERVICE PLANS IN MARION
The Forest Service is holding public hearings on the management plan that will shape the future of WNC's National Forests for decades to come. Meetings will open with a presentation on significant issues, management areas, and the development of plan components. 11/14/14 UU SOCIAL JUSTICE FILM
On Friday, November 14th, we are screening the Academy Award nominated and Emmy Award winning documentary, "Promises", a film about the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, from the perspectives of  seven children.  Even though this movie was filmed in 2001, it is no less timely today. The film is at 7 PM. Location is the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Asheville at the corner of Edwin Place and Charlotte Street. No charge, donations are welcome.

11/14/14 LECTURE AT UNCA
This lecture is “Environmental Ethics” and will be held at Carmichael Humanities Lecture Hall. Time is 11:25 AM. Free and open to the public. Lecture Presented By: Prof. Campbell, Lecturer, Humanities Program. Threats to environmental sustainability cannot be addressed with technical solutions alone; this lecture considers some of the ways that human value systems contribute to environmental problems and how re-thinking environmental values can create positive change.

11/14/14 LECTURE AT UNCA
This lecture is “World War Two and the Holocaust”. Characterized by mass mobilization, total war, and incredible violence, WWII straddles the threshold between modernity and post-modernity, compelling a reassessment of what it means to be modern. Lecture by Dr. Rizzo, Associate Professor, Department of History. Time is 11:25 AM and location is Lipinsky Auditorium. Free and open to the public.

11/15/14 BUNCOMBE COUNTY WOMEN’S AGENDA ASSEMBLY
North Carolina Women United & Buncombe County Women’s Agenda requests your attendance and participation! Learn about supporting public policies that impact the full economic, legal and social equality of women in NC. Become part of an interactive group by helping to prioritize women’s issues that impact Buncombe County. Listen to legislators and topic experts explain how legislative issues can be advocated for and how we can make a difference. NC Women United (NCWU) is a coalition of progressive organizations and individuals committed to advancing public policy that supports the full economic, legal and social equality of women in NC. The agenda assemblies are organized locally and take place every other year before the Long Session of the Legislature. This event provides an excellent opportunity for training and education of women by learning the value of lobbying of local legislators during the NCWU Women’s Advocacy Day at the Legislative Bldg. in the following spring. 11/15/14 HARD TO RECYCLE DAY 
Bring out your DEAD... batteries, electronics, tvs, appliances, styrofoam, books and MORE to be properly recycled here in the US. The Hard 2 Recycle event returns to Arden Saturday, November 15th for "America Recycles Day". The location for this collection will be the parking lot of the old Fred's SpeakEasy AT 2310 Hendersonville Road (next to the Dairy Queen) in Arden. Easy access and our volunteers will be there to help you unload your items. Time is 10 AM to 2 PM (please no early or late drop offs).

11/16/14 ETHICAL SOCIETY OF ASHEVILLE MEETING
There will be an address “Critical Environmental Issues Facing WNC” will be presented by Julie Mayfield at this meeting. Mayfield is co-director of the WNC Alliance. She will discuses growth management, public land use, water quality, with an update on efforts to prevent fracking, Asheville Beyond Coal, and volunteer programs with the WNC Alliance. All are welcome and admission is free. Time is 2 PM to 3:30 PM and location is Friends Meeting House at 227 Edgewood Road in Asheville.

11/16/14 BENEFIT FOR GAZA
Featuring violinist Michael  Dabroski performing music by JS Bach, an original Suite for Gaza, Palestinian melodies, and sharing notes from a concert trip to Gaza City in December 2013. 11/17/14 STEM LECTURE AT UNCA
A STEM lecture “New Developments in Climate Change” will be made by Lenny Bernstein, co-author of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Report, which was awarded the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. STEM is an interdisciplinary lecture series with a focus on science, technology, engineering ad mathematics. Admission is free and open to the public. 11/18/14 FILM SCREENING BY DOCTORS WITHOUT BORDERS
Directed by Peter Casaer and narrated by Daniel Day-Lewis, this documentary provides a harrowing look at the challenges of delivering humanitarian aid in armed conflicts. “Access to the Danger Zone” explores the strategies that Doctors Without Borders uses to save lives in the world’s worst war zones, including Afghanistan, Somalia, and eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. Interviews with key experts from Doctors Without Borders, the International Committee of the Red Cross, and the United Nations are accompanied by dramatic footage shot in these countries in 2011 and 2012.  Join us following the screening for a Q&A with local Doctors Without Borders aid workers, who will share stories from their overseas assignments. 11/19/14 GREEN DRINKS
This event, a combination of a Green Drinks and Bioneers conference session, involves Dr. Adam Powell, a Religious Studies professor facilitating a panel of religious leaders in a discussion about the present and future relationship between religion and sustainability. The panelists include Rabbi Justin Goldstein; Wiccan Priest Byron Ballard; and Presbyterian Minister, Steve Runholt. After a brief introduction to the scholarly study of religion and its ties to sustainability, each religious leader will highlight how this relationship is playing out in their respective communities and offer insight into the future of bridge-building between these two realms. 11/20/14 TRANSGENDER DAY OF REMEMBRANCE
Join Just Us For All and TranZmission for TDoR this year. There will bea day time event for trans* folks who want to change their names legally through a name change workshop. The national Transgender Day of Remembrance objective is to highlight the losses that the trans* community faces due to anti-transgender bigotry and violence. The names of the deceased will be present and some of their stories will be told. The groups also want to highlight all lives of transgender folks including the survivors and the work they are doing. JUFA and TranZmission urges the Asheville community to please meet at the Civic Center on November 20, 2014 at 7 PM (please try to be dressed warm and be on time) and march to the Vance Monument to hear speakers during a candlelit vigil.

11/20/14 PEOPLE’S ADVOCACY & ACTION GROUP
Inequality based on race, gender, class, ability, orientation are deeply connected! For example, we know that racism impacts economics when you do not get hired for the job or are turned down to rent an apartment because of your race. Come explore these intersections through interactive activities & dialogue! Help Just Economics create a performance about intersectionality and our work for justice for our Annual Celebration in December!
