Upcoming events in the Asheville area this week

UPCOMING EVENTS

01/12/15 MOVE TO AMEND BUNCOMBE COUNTY MEETING
Monday, January 12th, 7 PM at the North Asheville Library at 1030 Merrimon Avenue in Asheville. Together we will be exploring the legal, legislative, and people driven history that has brought us to the point we are at today.  We will discuss how the events in history affect each of us in our daily lives now.  We will explore solutions, and why it is Move To Amend's position that we (as a nation) need a constitutional amendment.   We hope to leave you motivated, inspired, and with much food for thought. We will also briefly discuss our on-going study group, bringing everyone up to speed as to where we are in our book, "Unequal Protection, How Corporations Became People - and how you can fight back" by Thom Hartman, and inviting new knowledge seekers to join us. If you have any questions, please contact Diana Kruk 828-275-0680 or dianakrukmta@gmail.com.

01/12/15 TRANSITION ASHEVILLE EVENT
Beyond Photovoltaics: Harnessing Solar Energy for Resilient Living. Over recent decades, photovoltaic power generation–a method for converting solar energy into direct current electricity–has become the third most widely distributed renewable energy source in terms of global installed capacity, exceeded only by hydronic and wind power generation.  However, less well-known methods for harnessing the energy of sunlight are commonplace in building design and construction, as well as in the homes of innovative individuals striving to achieve a more resilient lifestyle.  At our upcoming social on Monday, January 12th, Jake Tucker, a recent transplant and new addition to Transition Asheville, will lead a discussion focusing on these alternative systems and devices that utilize our most abundant renewable power source, the sun.  Building systems include solar assisted climate control, solar water heating, as well as integrated multi-use systems.  Solar ovens and dehydrators are examples of household items that use directed sunlight to perform everyday tasks that otherwise would rely solely on electricity, thus reducing an individual’s dependence on centralized power generation. Jake then will introduce a proposed Transition Asheville project: design and construction of a small greenhouse on a property in West Asheville, built primarily from reused, re-purposed, or discarded building materials. Time is 6:30 PM and location is St. Mary’s Episcopal Church on Charlotte Street in Asheville.
