08/22/17 VETERANS FOR PEACE VIGIL - BECAUSE THE WARS STILL GO ON
Every Tuesday, Veterans for Peace Chapter 099 holds a vigil at Vance Monument in downtown Asheville. Time is 5 PM. This has been happening since 2002. No matter the weather, no matter if it falls on a holiday, they are out there standing for peace. Last year, our former president dropped 26,000 bombs on seven different countries. The current president seems to be trying to match or beat that horrible record. Meanwhile we are banning refugees from those countries we have destroyed. Show you are publicly against our country's endless wars and occupations by standing with Veterans for Peace.

08/22/17 OCCUPY WNC MEETING
The non-partisan group meets every 2nd and 4th Tuesdays at the Sneak E Squirrel in Sylva. The next meeting is  August 22nd at 7:00 PM in the restaurant’s Community Room. Supper beforehand at 6:00PM. 08/22/17 BOARD OF ELECTIONS MEETINGS
The next meeting of your local Buncombe County Board of Elections is on August 22. Be a part of Democracy NC’s ongoing efforts to observe and advocate with your local Board of Elections for fair and equitable elections. The agenda this month includes appointing judges and chief judges for municipal elections. This is being held on this date across most counties in WNC. Time varies, and location is the local country Board of Elections office. Contact that office for time and and more information. Meeting subject to cancellation and rescheduling. Contact Democracy NC if you want to be involved in their efforts to monitor these meetings. 

08/22/17 REPRESENTATIVE MCHENRY TOWN HALL MEETING

Community conversation with Jasmine Beach-Ferrara of the Campaign for Southern Equality and presentation by the ACLU of NC’s legal director Chris Brook about their new federal lawsuit challenging HB 142, the anti-LGBTQ law that replaced HB 2. Buncombe County Lunch & Learn - African American History Series. Don’t miss this African American History in Buncombe County lunch and learn series featuring three great local speakers.  This free lecture series will feature: July 25 - Dr. Darin Waters presenting the history of African American education in Asheville and WNC; August 23 - County Commissioner Al Whitesides presenting the wage gap and historical wealth disparities in the African American Community; September 27 - Dr. Sharon West presenting the access and availability of health care for African Americans in Buncombe County. Come learn more about the history of the African American community in Buncombe County-- the challenges, the triumphs and the future of our community. The lecture series will be held from Noon till 1:30 p.m. on each of the dates listed above at the Stephen's Lee Community Center (30 George Washington Carver Avenue in Asheville) free of charge with everyone welcome.

Stir the Soul Cafe Presents ‘Good News: Our Seeds of Peace are Sprouting!’ on Friday August 25, 10 -11:30 AM. Location is Friendship Hall - First Congregational Church at 20 Oak Street, Asheville. The Story of a Study Seedling of Hope for the World - Mary Olson will share about a new global treaty to binuclear weapons approved to move forward at the United Nations, July 7 and her small part in it. 08/27/17 WNC SOLIDARITY CONCERT SERIES 
The final Sunday of each month in 2017, two groups of WNC-based musicians and their ensembles will each perform a benefit concert to raise funding for WNC nonprofits. The music performed each week will fluctuate between jazz, rhythm & blues, soul, jazz funk, jazz fusion, and swing. Each event will host two groups, playing, consecutively between 3 and 5 PM with a brief intermission. All of proceeds go to the nonprofit organization. The nonprofit for today is the WNC Green Building Council. Act 1 is Ryan Barber and Friends and Act II is Drayton Aldridge. Location is The Block Off Biltmore at Eagle and South Market Streets in downtown Asheville. Suggested donation is $10, and are available the day of the event. 09/09/17 NC BIG SWEEP RIVER CLEANUP
The NC Big Sweep is a statewide effort to get volunteers in the water for a massive river cleanup. We take on all of the area's rivers, covering 25+ miles of just the French Broad in one day. We will provide dozens of boats, be we encourage participants that own their gear to bring it along. We will be working on the Swannanoa, Mills, Hominy and French Broad Rivers this year. International Day of Peace will be celebrated in Asheville on Saturday, September 16, 10 to 4 PM.  WNC 4 Peace is working with the Center for Art and Spirit at St. George Episcopal Church, 1 School Rd, Asheville. Organizations who want to be sponsors of the September 16 event should contact Rachael Bliss (828) 378-0125 before September 8. Peacemakers of the Year for WNC will be presented also on that day at 11 am following the reading of the Peace Day Proclamation.  We will also commemorate a recent peace martyr Heather Heyer, victim of a domestic terrorism act on August 12, 2017. 09/17/17 POVERTY SIMULATION EVENT
Carolina Jews for Justice/West and Just Economics Present Programs on the “Faces of Poverty” September 6th and 17th. As part of a state-wide ‘Call for Action for Raising Wages’ starting with Labor Day, Carolina Jews for Justice/West will be collaborating with Just Economics, to present two programs addressing the economic challenges of living in poverty in Buncombe County. On Sunday afternoon, September 17th from 3:00 PM to 5:30 PM we will continue our focus on hunger and poverty with a “Poverty Simulation” led by Just Economics. The meeting will be held at Congregation Beth Israel, 229 Murdock Street in Asheville. This thought-provoking and illuminating simulation makes real what it is like to live as a poor person in Asheville today. The cost is $10 and participation will be limited to the first 45 registrants. Weekly Volunteer Positions

Website editor and manager 
 This position requires a minimum of 1 hour and a maximum of 8 hours per week, hours may fluctuate  

Website managers will preferably have experience with WordPress themes and plugins, as well as graphic design experience
Writing and programming experience are also a plus
Facebook manager
This position requires a minimum of 3 hours and a maximum of 5 hours per week, hours may fluctuate  
Facebook managers will preferably have experience with Facebook Business pages and Facebook event pages, as well as Facebook advertising knowledge and/or experience
Blogging coordinator 
This position requires a minimum of 2 hours and a maximum of 5 hours per week, hours may fluctuate  
Blog writers will preferably have writing and editing experience, as well as basic WordPress experience

Monthly Volunteer Positions
Email marketing manager 
This position requires a minimum of 5 hours and a maximum of 10 hours per month, hours may fluctuate  
Email marketing volunteers will preferably be familiar with MailChimp or a similar enewsletter system like Constant Contact, Aweber, iContact, ect
Social media street team 
This position requires being in the field and having access to a smartphone or data enabled tablet or ipad, access to professional cameras is also welcome
Street team members must be able to attend monthly events and actions in order to document them in real time
In order to avoid one person carrying the burden of attending all events it would be best if the street team was made up of 3 - 5 people
Street team members will preferably be familiar with Facebook Business and Event pages, if possible they will also have experience with Facebook Live  
Video volunteer
This position requires video recording and editing experience
This person must be able to take video footage collected by street team members, staff, and other volunteers and edit it into to smaller sound bites, social media content, and more
This person must be able to add logos and text to video files
This person must be able to record video interviews of experts, staff, and local leaders from time to time
We would invite a video volunteer to come up with creative ways to document and tell the story of the Community Bill of Rights
