Occupy Asheville will commemorate the one year anniversary of Occupy Wall Street by meeting at Pritchard Park at 4:30 PM. There will be a short rally and a march to City County Plaza for the 99-second Soapbox. A General Assembly/Coordinating Council meeting will also be held in front of City Hall. If raining, we will be under the City Hall overhang. All are welcome. Please bring OCCUPY signs!

09/23/12 NATIONAL ALLIANCE ON MENTAL ILLNESS WESTERN CAROLINA
"The Greatest Show of Courage" Circus Carnival and Parade on Sunday, September 23 from Noon to 4 PM in Pack Square. Our daughter Janet lives with mental illness (bipolar rapid cycling, with generalized anxiety). To my wife Bonnie and me, Janet is an example of great courage, as she manages her life while recovering from the illness. The NAMI Circus, 6 months in the making, will be a celebration of the hope we hold in recovery and it will be "FUN-raising, fund-raising, and awareness-raising." For more details, take a look at the NAMI web-site www.namiwnc.org. We are asking for volunteers to work at the circus and teams to raise money by marching in the parade, or just come and enjoy the fun and learn something more about mental illness.

Event is free and open to the public. Features music, dance, speakers, bell ringing in celebration of one day of global ceasefire by the United Nations since 2002. In case of rain, an abbreviated version of the event will be moved to the nearby First Congregational United Church of Christ, 20 Oak Street. (This is a change from a prior announcement.) 09/21/12 WNC PHYSICANS FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
We usually hold our monthly steering committee meetings from noon till 2 PM on the 3rd Friday each month. We have recently been meeting at Steve and Beth Gilman's home at 18 Birchwood Lane in the Oteen area of East Asheville. We bring our own lunches, socializing and eating from noon till 12:30; beverages are provided. The business meeting lasts from 12:30 till about 2:00 PM.

Local food company and chefs come together to support local efforts to end hunger on Sunday, September 30, from 2 to 6 PM at Asheville Music Hall. Tickets are $12 in advance, and $15 at the door. The event will bring together local chefs to create their versions of the sandwich with the only constant ingredient being Smiling Hara Tempeh. In 1997, a tragedy struck the family of Israeli-American Miko Peled: His beloved niece Smadar was killed by a suicide bomber in Jerusalem. That tragedy propelled Peled onto a journey of discovery. It pushed him to re-examine many of the beliefs he had grown up with, as the son and grandson of leading figures in Israel's political-military elite, and transformed him into a courageous and visionary activist in the struggle for human rights and a hopeful, lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians.
