UPCOMING EVENTS

09/10/12 MOVE TO AMEND MEETING
MABCO Meeting on Monday, September 10, at 7 PM at the RE Commons at Unitarian Universalist Church of Asheville.  Move to Amend is a grassroots organization with the goal of ending corporate personhood in the US.  Please consider joining us at the next Move to Amend Buncombe County (MABCO) meeting at 7 PM on September 10.

09/10/12 AUTHOR EVENT AT FIRESTORM CAFE
This time last decade, Daniel Simpson was an ambitious young foreign correspondent, based in Belgrade. When the New York Times hyped the invasion of Iraq, he resigned in disgust and went native, high on drugs. He thought he'd found some more inspiring colleagues, and decided to stage a Serbian version of Woodstock - a festival on an island in the Danube. He thought the event would help transform the region. Instead, he got embroiled with Balkan gangsters. His memoir, A Rough Guide to the Dark Side, relates this with honesty and humor.  While reflecting on the festival debacle, Daniel explains what he learned as a corporate reporter: that news is often skewed to suit the powerful, and drowns out most dissent with propaganda. He also shares his thoughts about solutions.  Time is 5 PM.

09/11/12 ASHEVILLE CITY COUNCIL MEETING
The International Day of Peace proclamation will be read at the City Council meeting, which starts at 5 PM.  Please show up and support the culture of peace in our community.  We need a critical mass at both of these events.  We are getting our community leaders to promote bringing our war dollars home for use domestically instead of through destruction around the globe.  Tell our city leaders thank you for standing with us in these efforts.

09/11/12 MEL CHIN’S MOVIE “9/11-9/11”
This is a showing of an animated film based on the 1973 coup d’etat organized by the Chilean military (unofficially endorsed by Nixon and the CIA) contrasted with the 2001 attacks on the World Trade Towers.  This will be at the Asheville Art Museum at 5:30 PM, and Mel Chin will be in attendance to discuss the film.

09/11/12 BUILDING BRIDGES SESSION
This series is on consecutive Tuesdays until November 6, 2012.  Time is 7 PM.  Cost is $30 and registration is required.  There is more information below, including who to contact.  Building Bridges of Asheville is devoted specifically to dialogue regarding Black/White relations in our community. All topics are presented in the context of White Privilege and Structural Racism.

09/11/12 ‘NO TO THE HOTEL’ RALLY
The Church is holding a 'Say No to the Hotel' Rally next Tuesday, September 11th, to protest the McKibbon Hotel plan for a hotel on city-owned land in front of the Basilica. The Rally starts at 4:30 at the City Building.  City Council has said that they'll take public comment AND make a decision at their meeting that night.  This announcement came from PARC.

09/13/12 UNCA Well-a-Bration Keynote Speaker
Time is 7 PM and the location for this event is the Justice Center at UNCA.  UNCA students free with OneCard (Limit one ticket per student; must have ticket to enter).  $10 all others. For ticket information, please call 828.251.6600.  UNC ASHEVILLE'S WELL-A-BRATION presents author, activist and sex advice columnist Dan Savage. In response to students taking their own lives after being bullied in school, Savage created the It Gets Better Project, which has become a worldwide movement garnering many social media awards and inspiring millions to participate. His internationally syndicated column, Savage Love, as well as "Savage U," a new MTV series, and his multiple books all use frank humor to bring LGBT relationships into the mainstream and reflect on larger civil rights issues.

09/14/12 - 09/16/12 SOUTHERN GREEN LIVING EXPO
http://southerngreenlivingexpo.com/

09/14/12 UNITARIAN UNIVERSALIST SOCIAL JUSTICE MOVIE NIGHT
A gripping tale of microbes, medicine & money, “UNDER OUR SKIN”  exposes the hidden story of Lyme disease, one of the most serious and  controversial epidemics of our time. Each year, thousands go  undiagnosed or misdiagnosed, often told that their symptoms are all in  their head. Following the stories of patients and physicians fighting for their lives and livelihoods, the film brings into focus a haunting picture of the health care system and a medical establishment all too willing to put profits ahead of patients.  FMI contact David devwilliams@juno.com.  Time is 7 PM and location is UU Church at Edwin and Charlotte Streets.

09/14/12 FILM NIGHT AT FIRESTORM CAFE
“The Abortion Diaries” is a documentary featuring 12 women who speak candidly about their experiences with abortion. The women are doctors, subway workers, artists, activists, military personnel, teachers and students; they are Black, Latina, Jewish and White; they are mothers or child-free; they range in age from 19 to 54. This event is sponsored by the Open Umbrella Collective, a volunteer-based organization located in Asheville, NC. Currently Open Umbrella supports folks at Femcare, the only abortion clinic in Western North Carolina.  Open Umbrella believes each person's unique pregnancy experience should be respected and supported. Their work as doulas fosters a culture that values individuals, families, and the strength they find in community; by identifying as full spectrum doulas, they offer support regardless of the pregnancy outcome.  Time is 7 PM.

ON LINE CAMPAIGN:

Be One of ‘2 Million Friends’! for peace in Afghanistan
Join the ‘2 Million Friends’ Campaign.

Farzana, 22 year old Afghan stage actress, and a member of the Afghan Peace Volunteers, said, “When I express the whole range of emotions on stage, I enter an awareness, and a thrilling consciousness of human reality. I have a pain and my husband and fellow Afghan citizens, men and women, share the pain with me. It is the pain of being treated as less than humans. We are human beings. We have wishes. War has brought this pain on us. War kills our joy and hides our tears.”

Farzana calls out to our compassionate imagination, “Instead of fight, talk and build, I suggest, ‘Be friends, talk and build!’”

Listen to Farzana and the Afghan Peace Volunteers say in this video clip “Be One of 2 Million Friends!”
Why ‘2 Million Friends’?

2 million Afghan victims of war were killed over the past four decades. We wish to remember them by finding 2 million friends, to call for a ceasefire in Afghanistan. More friends! No more war. No more killing.

Help Farzana and the Afghan Peace Volunteers find those friends : Visit http://2millionfriends.org

The letter will be ‘presented’ to the U.N. office in Kabul on the International Day of Human Rights, December 10th, 2012.
4.        Host or join concurrent, solidarity events on Dec 10th, 2012
An event will be held in Kabul and attended by ordinary Afghans and Afghan civil society groups, Dr Sima Samar (Chairperson of the Afghan Independent Human Rights Commission ), Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Mairead Maguire and others.  You can host or join concurrent, solidarity events on December 10th , 2012 in your own communities and countries, to remember the 2 million Afghan victims of war in various ways e.g. releasing doves, flying kites, displaying banners, lighting candles etc.,
