12/10/12 INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS DAY

12/10/12 MOVE TO AMEND MEETING
Our next Move to Amend meeting will start at 7 PM, Monday, Dec 10, 630 PM in the lower Religious Education space, which is again on the basement level of Asheville's Unitarian Universalist Church, northwest corner on Charlotte St. and Edwin Place. 12/10/12 BILL OF RIGHTS DEFENSE COMMITTEE
Join with community members passionate about civil liberties on Monday, December 10th to watch and discuss two short films -- "Role Call" and "The Call" -- plus an extended segment of "Race: The Power of An Illusion."  Bill of Rights Day is next Saturday (12/15) and the Bill of Rights Defense Committee is planning to build community, squash oppression and realize some meaningful justice in 2013. Let's talk about how we're going to do it! Time is 7 PM and location is Firestone Café and Books.

12/11/12 JUSTICE FRIENDS’ NIGHT
Kicking off a regular social event to be held at Firestorm Cafe. This is an informal gathering of Greens together with other folks in the Asheville community, people with an activist mindset who are interested in topics related to justice. This is a discussion group and a social event. Additional live performance: Musician/songwriter, Jack Herranen accompanied by Sam Harding perform Jack's own blend of Bolivian/Appalachian Folk, as well as covers of old songs by Woodie Guthrie and famed Anarchist & Wobbly, Joe Hill. Time is 7 PM.

12/11/12 CHILDREN FIRST/CIS EVENT
“Building a Strong North Carolina” - Tuesday, December 11th, 8:30 to 11:00 AM at the AB Tech Enka campus. Please join with us as we share delicious food, warm company, and a little about what we (and you) have been doing in the past year in to relocalize and revitalize our community in the spirit of connection and resilience. Social Justice Film night will feature “I AM” a film about a man’s personal journey after a bicycle accident, ‘the nature of humanity’ and the ‘world’s ever-growing addiction to materialism’. 12/15/12 GUERRILLA FARMING AND RESISTANCE IN PALESTINE
Recently banned from the West Bank, Asheville activist Elyana has returned hoping to discuss experiences of the occupation, olive harvest, Israeli settler violence plus ways to support Palestinian farmers. Location is Firestorm Café and Books and time is 6 PM.

Western Carolinians for Peace and Justice in the Middle East is launching its boycott campaign against products produced in illegal Israeli settlements with vigils on December 15th and 22nd from 12 – 2 p.m. on the sidewalk in front of Best Buy near Asheville Mall. We are targeting SodaStream, a home seltzer maker; made in the illegal Israeli settlement of Ma'aleh Adumim (West Bank occupied Palestine). All are welcome. 12/28/12 ASHEVILLE HOMELESS PARADE
This event is in defense of the rights of our homeless brothers and sisters here in Asheville and a rejection of the criminalization of homelessness the City has overseen throughout the past three-four years. The Parade will begin at Pritchard Park at 2 PM and march to Vance Memorial where speakers from the homeless community will speak.

12/30/12 to 01/01/13 ALTERNATIVE NEW YEARS
This is a gathering and vigil at the gates of Trident Nuclear Submarine base, with cabins at Crooked River State Park in Georgia.  See below for more information.

01/02/13 SIERRA CLUB MEETING
Wayne Coldwell and Steve Woody will discuss Cataloochee and the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. Program starts at 7:15 PM and location is Unitarian Church at Edwin Place and Charlotte Street.

Gathering and vigil at gates of Trident Nuclear Submarine base
DECEMBER 30, 31, JAN 1

CROOKED RIVER STATE PARK
St. Mary's, Georgia

Join long-time veteran Activists from throughout the south who gather annually at Crooked River State Park for connection, encouragement and community building (with some programming) and participate in a New Years Eve vigil at the Trident base at midnight.

Cost: The cost of a space at a cottage is approximately $20 per night, sometimes more, sometimes less, depending on how many stay in a cottage.  To reserve a space from Asheville and for carpool info, contact Clare at New South Network of War Resisters or call  828-242-5610.  Each cottage prepares meals to share coordinated among those sharing the space.

Accommodations: Each cottage is furnished either two or three bedrooms with two queen size beds each, linens, some towels, a living room, and a furnished kitchen with stove, refrigerator, and some utensils. Floor space and space on a screened in porch is also available.

Programs include speakers and presentations on local and regional issues.
