This is the third in our monthly series of Asheville SURJ (Showing Up for Racial Justice) Coalition Building gatherings. This month's gathering will focus on further exploring ways to support presenters from our first two meetings, DeWayne Barton of the Pearson Project/Hood Huggers and Asheville Black Lives Matter. It is not necessary for you to have been present at any prior session to participate in the discussion/exploration. We invite the community to gather to explore ways to get involved with the cause of racial justice here in Asheville. This meeting is an excellent opportunity for newcomers and previously-involved folks to find out about this network and the projects our Asheville chapter is working on. Potluck style meal before and during the presentation. No worries if you are unable to bring anything, there will be enough for everyone with folks chipping in other than food. Asheville Green Drinks is a networking party and part of the self-organizing global grassroots movement to connect communities with environmental ideas, media and action. People who are interested in environmental issues and topics meet up for a drink and occasionally listen to an expert in environment, ecology, and social justice. Asheville Green Drinks moves to a bi-monthly format in May. The location of Green Drinks will be the Center for Graduate Studies of Asheville at Lenoir-Rhyne University Board Room at 36 Montford Avenue in Asheville until we find a more convenient location. Malaprop's Bookstore/Cafe is proud to launch Authors for Action, a new event series that pairs authors with nonprofits in order to amplify a cause, raise the profile of change-makers, and create a space for the community to come together for good. Our first event, KILL THE BILL, is a fundraiser directed to action against HB2. This will be held at Asheville Community Theatre at 6:30 PM. VIP ticketed cocktail party from 5 - 6:30 PM at Sovereign Remedies. Tickets may be purchased at Asheville Community Theatre. Authors Sara Gruen, Charles Frazier, Wiley Cash, Joshilyn Jackson, Kim Michele Richardson, Mary Laura Philpott, Jamie Mason, Beth Revis, Jake Bible and more will join us for what is sure to be the literary event of the season. 05/21/16 MARCH AGAINST GMOS
Join us on Saturday 5/21/16 for our 5th march through downtown Asheville, to raise awareness of the dangers of Genetically Modified Organisms to our food, to our health, & to our children’s health. The march will progress through downtown Asheville, and conclude at the Montford Arts & Music Festival, where we will have a table. The festival hosts local bands, food & food trucks, vendors, no-GMO and vegan libations, and our ‘GMO FREE NC’ table, will offer lots of info and free samples. Wear your costumes and bring your signs, bells & whistles. March starts at noon. The event will include a pre-protest at the Vance Monument at 11 AM, with signs and chanting to kick off the march and hopefully draw more of a crowd. We will then proceed by marching around the downtown area with our signs as we continue chanting and bringing good energy for our cause. March will start at noon. 05/22/16 NONVIOLENT COMMUNICATION INTENSIVE
Taking our NVC to the next level – a day long intensive for people already committed to living NVC. Roberta Wall, certified NVC trainer, will be running this day long intensive. This is based on the work of Dr. Marshall Rosenberg. Time is 10 AM to 4 PM and will be held at a private location in Asheville. This intensive is for people who have at least completed one of Roberta’s four week series or comparable training AND have been putting NVC into practice in your life. In this day, we will jump into some of the deep inner NVC consciousness –raising practices and learn, hone and practice the NVC models/templates for self-empathy, empathy and honestly expressing yourself. We will make use of the NVC dance floors as well as extensive modelling of the NVC steps and maps of communication. Born in Minnesota, he participated in the civil rights and Peace movements of the 1960s. Halper immigrated to Israel in 1973 after attending rabbinical school. In 1997, Halper co-founded the Israeli Committee Against Home Demolitions (ICAHD) to challenge and resist the Israeli policy of demolishing Palestinian homes. As a Coordinating Director of ICAHD, Halper organized and led nonviolent direct action and civil disobedience against Israel’s occupation policies and authorities, at times facing bulldozers in front of Palestinian homes. He also organizes Israelis, Palestinians, and internationals to help rebuild demolished Palestinian homes. Dr. Halper will be speaking at Lenoir-Rhyne College at 36 Montford Avenue in Asheville at 4:30 PM concerning human rights and pro-peace activism in Israel/Palestine. On Thursday, June 2nd, Just Us United will hold a Speakeasy Soirée at Lex 18 from 6 to 8 PM. The event will consist of an auction and fundraiser, with live music, food, drinks, and guest speakers participating. Businesses across Western North Carolina will be helping to make sure this event is a success by sponsoring our fundraiser, or making in-kind donations. Funds from our 2016 Speakeasy Soirée would allow us to hire the necessary field staff to run a campaign in house district 118. Throughout this campaign we will engage and educate voters through phone calls, door to door contacts, mailers, and media, to elect a representative who promotes policies that are in line with the needs of North Carolina families. Just Us United is a nonprofit based in Western North Carolina that engages in a combination of voter engagement, community outreach, legislative accountability, and advocacy, with the goal of promoting policies that support North Carolina families.
