05/12/16 WALK A MILE ASHEVILLE
Walk a Mile Asheville is the people’s march against rape, sexual assault, and gender violence! Rape is commonly seen as a women’s issue despite the fact that it affects countless men. Walk a Mile Asheville is a chance for local men and women to take a stand on the issue by participating in a one mile walk through downtown Asheville. Many of the men will wear high heel shoes – which gives us a chance to take a closer look at gender stereotypes that contribute to a culture where sexual violence is common. We are encouraging both men and women to walk in the shoes of another. As in years past you will see men in heels of all heights. However, while wearing heels is encouraged, it is certainly not necessary to attend. The key is just to be there! March with us in an effort to stop sexual violence in our community- in whatever shoes you’d like! You will also see women and young people, as well as men; join this march because after all, this is an issue that impacts everyone in our community. For more information or to register or sponsor, please contact Our VOICE at 828-252-0562 or email walk@ourvoicenc.org.

The book includes four case studies -- the Armenian, Nazi, Cambodian, and Rwandan genocides -- and substantive introductory and concluding chapters that contribute to two key debates within genocide studies: how to define genocide and place it in relation to other mass atrocities, and how to detect and analyze the social, historical, and cultural forces that produce genocidal violence. “To Kill a People” examines a vast range of the latest research, offers original interpretations and arguments, and draws upon the author's own archival research on three continents. 06/10/16 AUTHOR EVENT AT FIRESTORM
“Locked Down, Locked Out: Why Prison Doesn’t Work and How We Can Do Better” looks at how prison tears families and communities apart, creating a rippling effect that touches every corner of our society. Through the stories of prisoners and their families, as well as her own family’s experience of her sister’s incarceration, Schenwar shows how the institution that locks up 2.3 million Americans—and decimates poor communities of color—is shredding the ties that, if nurtured, could foster real collective safety. The destruction does not end upon exiting the prison walls: the 95 percent of prisoners who are released emerge with even fewer economic opportunities and fewer human connections on the outside than before. Locked Down, Locked Out shows how incarceration takes away the very things that might enable people to build better lives.
