I know what Woody meant when he wrote “This Land Is Your Land” but in this new century and its awakening understanding that this land was, in fact, stolen from those here before us, I had to write a new verse to explain my discomfort with singing the original lyrics:
“Those golden deserts and redwood forests
Were stolen from those who’ve come before us.
Let us be mindful as we walk through them
That this land was lent to you and me.”
