Thirty years ago....
SABRA AND SHATILA MASSACRE
"Journalist Robert Fisk returns to the Sabra and Shatila Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon. Fisk recounts how Lebanese Christian militias who were under the control of the Israeli military murdered over 2000 Palestinians in the camps. Fisk also points to a building in the distance from where he insists the Israeli forces could witness the massacre. The Israeli government's own Kahan Commission found that future Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon was personally responsible for the massacre. This is from a documentary Fisk made about "why so many Muslims have come to hate the West." But we know the real reason is because they hate our freedom, right?"

"The Greatest Show of Courage" Circus Carnival and Parade on Sunday, September 23 from Noon to 4 PM in Pack Square. Our daughter Janet lives with mental illness (bipolar rapid cycling, with generalized anxiety). To my wife Bonnie and me, Janet is an example of great courage, as she manages her life while recovering from the illness. The NAMI Circus, 6 months in the making, will be a celebration of the hope we hold in recovery and it will be "FUN-raising, fund-raising, and awareness-raising." For more details, take a look at the NAMI web-site www.namiwnc.org. We are asking for volunteers to work at the circus and teams to raise money by marching in the parade, or just come and enjoy the fun and learn something more about mental illness.

We usually hold our monthly steering committee meetings from noon till 2 PM on the 3rd Friday each month. We have recently been meeting at Steve and Beth Gilman's home at 18 Birchwood Lane in the Oteen area of East Asheville. We bring our own lunches, socializing and eating from noon till 12:30; beverages are provided. The business meeting lasts from 12:30 till about 2:00 PM.

In 1997, a tragedy struck the family of Israeli-American Miko Peled: His beloved niece Smadar was killed by a suicide bomber in Jerusalem. That tragedy propelled Peled onto a journey of discovery. It pushed him to re-examine many of the beliefs he had grown up with, as the son and grandson of leading figures in Israel's political-military elite, and transformed him into a courageous and visionary activist in the struggle for human rights and a hopeful, lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians. This time last decade, Daniel Simpson was an ambitious young foreign correspondent, based in Belgrade. When the New York Times hyped the invasion of Iraq, he resigned in disgust and went native, high on drugs. He thought he'd found some more inspiring colleagues, and decided to stage a Serbian version of Woodstock - a festival on an island in the Danube. He thought the event would help transform the region. Instead, he got embroiled with Balkan gangsters. His memoir, A Rough Guide to the Dark Side, relates this with honesty and humor. While reflecting on the festival debacle, Daniel explains what he learned as a corporate reporter: that news is often skewed to suit the powerful, and drowns out most dissent with propaganda. He also shares his thoughts about solutions. Time is 5 PM.

This is a showing of an animated film based on the 1973 coup d’etat organized by the Chilean military (unofficially endorsed by Nixon and the CIA) contrasted with the 2001 attacks on the World Trade Towers. This will be at the Asheville Art Museum at 5:30 PM, and Mel Chin will be in attendance to discuss the film.

“The Abortion Diaries” is a documentary featuring 12 women who speak candidly about their experiences with abortion. The women are doctors, subway workers, artists, activists, military personnel, teachers and students; they are Black, Latina, Jewish and White; they are mothers or child-free; they range in age from 19 to 54. This event is sponsored by the Open Umbrella Collective, a volunteer-based organization located in Asheville, NC. Currently Open Umbrella supports folks at Femcare, the only abortion clinic in Western North Carolina. Open Umbrella believes each person's unique pregnancy experience should be respected and supported. Their work as doulas fosters a culture that values individuals, families, and the strength they find in community; by identifying as full spectrum doulas, they offer support regardless of the pregnancy outcome. This time last decade, Daniel Simpson was an ambitious young foreign correspondent, based in Belgrade. When the New York Times hyped the invasion of Iraq, he resigned in disgust and went native, high on drugs. He thought he'd found some more inspiring colleagues, and decided to stage a Serbian version of Woodstock - a festival on an island in the Danube. He thought the event would help transform the region. Instead, he got embroiled with Balkan gangsters. His memoir, A Rough Guide to the Dark Side, relates this with honesty and humor. While reflecting on the festival debacle, Daniel explains what he learned as a corporate reporter: that news is often skewed to suit the powerful, and drowns out most dissent with propaganda. This is a showing of an animated film based on the 1973 coup d’etat organized by the Chilean military (unofficially endorsed by Nixon and the CIA) contrasted with the 2001 attacks on the World Trade Towers. This will be at the Asheville Art Museum at 5:30 PM, and Mel Chin will be in attendance to discuss the film.

“The Abortion Diaries” is a documentary featuring 12 women who speak candidly about their experiences with abortion. The women are doctors, subway workers, artists, activists, military personnel, teachers and students; they are Black, Latina, Jewish and White; they are mothers or child-free; they range in age from 19 to 54. This event is sponsored by the Open Umbrella Collective, a volunteer-based organization located in Asheville, NC. Currently Open Umbrella supports folks at Femcare, the only abortion clinic in Western North Carolina. Open Umbrella believes each person's unique pregnancy experience should be respected and supported. Their work as doulas fosters a culture that values individuals, families, and the strength they find in community; by identifying as full spectrum doulas, they offer support regardless of the pregnancy outcome. Self-reliance
I am baffled by the people in this country who do not want to help out other people who are poor, homeless, sick, elderly, or whatever - when in fact, THEY will be in that place at some future time in their lives. I am also baffled by the desire to get the little people, the "welfare queens", when in fact what is hurting our economy is the MASSIVE AMOUNT OF CORPORATE WELFARE that this country hands out decade after decade after decade. And they don't seem to care about that.

International Day of Peace in Buncombe County
PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, the ideal of peace embraces the deepest hopes of all people, and remains humanity’s guiding inspiration; and
WHEREAS, beginning in 2002, the United Nations has designated September 21st of each year as the International Day of Peace with one complete day of ceasefire around the globe; and
WHEREAS, the United Nations dedicates the International Day of Peace to nonviolence and the cessation of hostilities, and calls upon all nations and people to commemorate the day through educational efforts, public awareness, and adherence to the global ceasefire; and
WHEREAS, Peace Day activities around the world include peace marches, concerts, events, poetry readings, prayer ceremonies, art exhibits, vaccination campaigns, memorial services, school assemblies, family reunions and sporting events – all made possible by the laying down of arms; and
WHEREAS, Buncombe County Commissioners recognize that the exceedingly high expenditure at the national level on a constant state of war around the planet not only increases our federal debt to intolerable level, but also robs citizens and veterans of opportunities to meet vital human needs such as healthcare and education, hampers the creation of stable local jobs, delays needed improvements on local and national infrastructure, and stagnates developments of renewable energy sources, and
WHEREAS, these local groups and businesses, along with schools, faith communities, artists and individuals have supported the International Day of Peace, bringing together hundreds to affirm our county’s commitment to building peace through nonviolence:

Immunity for crimes
Last week, AG Holder decided not to prosecute anyone for torture or murder of detainees in the War on Terror (over 100 detainees were murdered or killed under the Bush administration). This country has also decided not to prosecute anyone for the financial crimes that caused our current depression. No one is going to be prosecuted for the War of Aggression on Iraq (just like no one was held accountable for our prior Wars of Aggression) and no one was held accountable for failing to protect the American people on 9/11/01. And no one is currently being held accountable for the drone murders.
And it goes back further than that. No one was prosecuted for the Iran-Contra crimes, and the folks behind those crimes are also the ones behind the war crimes on Iraq and the planning of war crimes on Iran. A War of Aggression is the worst crime of all crimes, because it spans so many other crimes that are massively hideous.
I really don't see how this country is going to make it long-term when big crimes are ignored or rewarded, even while the law comes down hard on the little people who commit little crimes or even victimless crimes. The financial crimes alone will crush us one day.
