PDA conference call on 04-08-08

This was the Out of Iraq conference call. Just after the Progressive Democrats of Buncombe County meeting I got on a phone meeting with PDA. They had Bill Goold on the call, who is chair person of the Progressive Caucus, and he talked about how he does not think that restricting funding for the Iraq war will succeed without a lot more pressure, and also about how the current Democratic Party leaders are basically waiting out the next nine months of the bush administration and not willing to go out on a limb at all. They feel that cutting all funds for the Iraq war is politically risky. He also said that the surge is being played up as a big success, and I made a comment at that point that pretty soon the reality in Iraq will catch up with the American public. There was an aide to Rep. Waters on the phone call too. Several of the other PDA organizers expressed fears that the bush administration will attack Iran. I don’t share that concern, but recently a Hizbollah fighter died while training in Iran, and the rumor is that Iran has sold Hizbollah weapons that will bring down planes. And, Iran is boosting nuclear potential – which only means that they are promoting more nuclear power development, not nuclear weapons. (None of these are good signs, but then this country has done far, far worse.)

So, how come there were signs saying FREE TIBET on the Golden Gate Bridge, but no signs of FREE IRAQ? This war will still be raging a year from now, no matter who gets inaugurated. I am already thinking that a mass demonstration in DC is badly needed, and I don’t mean a million people, I mean 50 million people.
