Some upcoming events for progressives:
04/04/08 – Showing of the movie “At the River I Stand” to mark the 40th Anniversary of the death of Martin Luther King, Jr.
April 4, 2007 marks the 40th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King in Memphis. Dr. King was in Memphis to support striking sanitation workers who were fighting against unsafe working conditions, poverty level wages, a lack of respect on the job and to demand recognition of their union. This was an historic merging of the civil rights and labor movements. To commemorate Dr. Kings' vision and to honor the bravery of the sanitation workers and the citizens of Memphis who stood up to the racist Memphis establishment we will be showing a documentary, "At the River I Stand" which tells this story.
The event will be held on Friday, April 4 at 7:00 PM at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in downtown Asheville on Oak Street. This event is sponsored by the WNC Central Labor Council in conjunction with Christians for a United Community, Just Economics and the MLK Association of Asheville. For more information call Laura Gordon at the WNC Central Labor Council at 225-2909.
